Coumaden Side Effects

Just surious to know if anyone has had side effects from this drug?

I have been taking coumadin for about 2 months for DVT in left leg with no problems at all.

INR is all over the map (1.5 - 4.6). Can't seem to get it in consistently the range of 2-3. It goes down taking 6.25g and up taking 6.5g. Each time something happens, my INR is high.

One day, about three weeks ago,  my urine got really dark. I got scared because I thought I was bleeding internally and ran to the hospital. Urinalysis and blood work was fine but the doctor agreed that the urine was dark. INR was 4.6. The darkness seems to come and go. Go figure!

Three days ago my skin felt "prickly" and strarted to itch/tingle. Went to the hospital again and INR was 3.4 . I still have the prickly sensation but not as bad. Anyone else have that? I have scoured the Internet looking for info on the side effects of coumadin. Not a whole out there.

Have lots of more questions which I'll save for later posts.

Re: Coumaden Side Effects

Have been on 10mg for just over 1 month following a DVT and a PE. Since starting coumadin I have had terrible constant shoulder tip pain and worsening chest pain  I have just spent a week in hospital trying to get it sorted but nothing was found to explain my worsening symptons. The spasm type  pain in my chest often becomes excruiatingly painful at 10/10, lasts for hours which also makes my shoulder pain intensify. It seems to come on  soon after taking my warfarin. I have  asked the doctors if it could be related to a sid effect of warfarin. None seem to be sure.  I have also experienced other gastric symptons but these are out of proportion to the chest pain. I have a constant tight feeling in the upper abdo just beneath the sternum and around my diaphragm. I am  also extremely tired and lethargic all the time. I was  extremely fit  before with no health problems. Has any one else had similar symptons or heard of them.

Re: Coumaden Side Effects

Shelly,

I'm no expert, but I do know that Warfarin is the generic brand for Coumadin.  Which one are you taking?  I saw some information on the net that makes me believe that Warfarin may not be all that it is hyped to be.  If I were you, I would insist on the Coumadin and then see if it clears up some of your problems.

Wishing you the best.

Re: Coumaden Side Effects

Has anyone been on coumadin for years?  I have been taking it for 20 years (aortic valve replacement).  The past several years some very strange & uncomfortable symptoms have begun appearing.  My INR used to be very constant - now jumps all over.  This week was 1.4; has gone as high as 8.  Severe muscle/joint pain has developed - w/slightly elevated ANA level.  Lupus has been suggested, but labs are not that indicative.  I am wondering if being on coumadin all these years has built something up in my system.  Dr.'s are puzzled, and don't know why my symptoms are the way they are.  I am 50 yrs/female.

Re: Coumaden Side Effects

I have been on the Warfarin for about three years now, because of some artery blockage, and I have had no problems with it.  In fast the amount I take, 7.5 mg per day has not changed in two years, and my pro-tine has been great.  I have noticed that your urine changes colors, but if you are on any cholestral lowing drugs I was told that would make it darker, and I take some of those as well.

Re: Coumaden Side Effects

Warfarin is Coumadin they are the samething. The only side effects I get is when I drink alcohol, I start to itch a day after. a good web site for Coumadin is   PTINR.COM   or   ASK.COM    and ask Coumadin side effects
I am on Coumain for aortic valve replacement; I have a mechanical valve. Coumadin keeps my blood thin enough so I don't get blood clods accumulate on the mechanical Valve. I keep the thinnest of my blood between 2.5 and 3.5, if the thinnest of my blood is over 4.0 for awhile I well get nose bleeds and if my blood is to thin. My blood will not clod where the blood is coming from, Because my blood is too thin to clod. Doctors can not keep your blood thinnest at  the recommended level. You yourself have got to watch what you eat. Food that have vitamin k well thicken your blood.

Re: Coumaden Side Effects

I just joined Injury Talk today and needed to reply to this first.  In Feb 2007, it was found out I had a DVT in left leg from ankle to lumbar.  I am like most of you!  Never had problems before.  Blood work was always good.  Never had any type of vascular problems before.  My heart is in normal range for my age 55.  So how come I have all these problems now?

Now I am taking 5 mg of Warfarin daily. With the possibility of taking this medication for the rest of my life.  Is Coumadin better than Warfarin? If I could afford it I would eliminate all generics from my prescriptions.  In the pass through my experience generics does not do the job as the regular brand does?

As for the tingling and pinches.  I always got them since I became a diabetic.  Now since I am on Warfarin I jerk, terrible and my insomnia is worst.  When I sleep I do a lot of talking and crying.  I wake my husband up often and that make him very uncomfortable.

My left leg really tingles is a darker red than my right leg.  I showed this to my doctor and he said it was a rash.  I do not feel it's a rash.  I feel it has something to do with my circulation on my left leg.  Since it took time to make the blood clot form that large; the function of the vein lost the elastically and is no longer able to work like it use too!  I have been on Warfarin since March 2007.  Any comments I am all ears!
