Astra Zeneca’s popular schizophrenia drug Seroquel has been linked with a high incidence of diabetes, hyperglycemia and other blood sugar disorders. Seroquel is in the class of drugs called atypical antipsychotics, which are a newer class of antipsychotics touted as having a lower incidence of blood sugar disorders than the older medications such as Haldol and Thorazine. Seroquel was approved by the FDA in 1997.

Data from a study that was reported at a conference of the International Society for Pharmacoepidemiology in Philadelphia August 23 and 24, 2003 showed that patients on Seroquel had 3.34 times as many cases of diabetes as those on older antipsychotic drugs. The study of 19,878 U.S. military veterans between October 1998 and October 2001 indicated that Seroquel and other members of the new class of anti-psychotic drugs posed a higher risk of diabetes. The effect was most pronounced with Seroquel.

Well something happened when I started seroquel

I started seroquel in Oct 2002.
I had normal cholesterol 197 and triglycerides 146 in that month.
Jan 2003 my triglycerides tripled to 438 and choleterol was 350 (these were all fasting tests).
In all subsequent tests by triglycerides have been high.

I now have ketons in my urine.

I'm going to get tested for diabetes as soon as I can.

Get the care you need. What concerns me about this drug it is being used for everything and I think this drug is far more deadly than just DM. The research we areseeing is paid for by the very company that is profitting from the sale of this drug. Good Luck Cathy

Re: Well something happened when I started seroquel

I wasn't aware of the effects of Seroquel and I've been taking it since April 2003. I have diabetes and my tryclicerides, liver enzymes, and increased physical pain have occurred since then. Yes, I too fast for my labs and each time my lab results have gotten worse. Now my regular doctor wants to take me off my oral meds and put me on insulin! She thinks my oral meds aren't working. They had before I started taking Seroquel, so am I in too deep?

Re: Well something happened when I started seroquel

My experience has been similar to some of those that others have posted here. Since starting Seroquel about 2 years ago, my type II diabetes has gotten progressively worse and is now at a point where diet and exercise just aren't controlling the disease, as it always had since its onset 5-6 years ago.  Also, my last year's cholesterol screening revealed an abnormally high triglyceride reading - it was so high that the true cholesterol reading couldn't be determined until the triglyceride readings were lowered through the use of Gemfebrozil over a 2-3 week period. And once the triglyceride levels were lowered, my cholesterol count was much higher than it ever had been.

I'm concerned about these side effects of seroquel usage, most of which I am experiencing to some extent already, and am of the opinion that I want to stop taking the seroquel and see if my general health, diabetes and cholesterol levels improve. This is something that I will of course speak with my Mental Health Provider about before taking any action on my own.

Does anyone else have a story about Seroquel and its side-effects? What about information on successfully kicking long-term seroquel usage?

Re: Well something happened when I started seroquel

I started taking seroquel, and passed out within 40 minutes each time.  My mh provider wouldn't listen to me about side effects.  I couldn't function when I did wake up.  It went on like that for months.  I became a zombie during the time I was up.  The reasons I was prescribed it became worse.  It didn't work for reasons prescribed.  I became very, very, very psychotic and suicidal.  Oh yeah, and mh provider didn't care.  It was sick. yikes

1)It is wonderful if you want to erase your mind!
  2) It is wonderful if you want to make Astra rich!
My Mom was placed on this stuff when I discovered that she was being poisoned by Prozac. Another drug she did not need. Lucky for Mom her system cound not tolerate it while she was withdrawn from the Prozac and she refused to take it once out of the hospital. Now she just uses the lowest dose of Ativan 3 times a day to help her with her swallowing problems. She has esophageal achalsia. She now has about $160.00 more a month that she can use to enjoy, now that she has her life back. There is nothing nice about being poisoned by these chemicals.  Be cautious about using such drugs. My Mom was one of the truely lucky ones most people who have been through what she  was through are either in nursing homes or in a cemetary. Cathy

I started taking seroquel 2 months ago and have loved it ever since.  The side effects are awesome.  My libido has increased 10 fold.  Now, all I ever want to do is have sex.....sex with everyone and everything.  Thank you Astra!

Re: Well something happened when I started seroquel

I am very happy with Seroquel (as well as Prozac). I have a clarity I could not achieve otherwise. These are not poisons. For persons who have trouble finding, nurturing and sustaining their better selves, like me these drugs can amount to the difference between a shortened unhappy life and a one of endless possibilities. Seroquel helped me to emerge from a life style of compulsive eating, narcotics abuse and general apathy to one where I have both hope and confidence I can achieve.

Re: Well something happened when I started seroquel

I started taking Seroquel in 1999 and felt that I finally found  a prescription for my very serious depression.  It is now 2004 and I was diagnosed with diabetes on my 47th birthday.  I had several symptoms of diabetes but did not know it at the time.  I kept getting yeast infections and always thirsty and would wake up in the middle of the night to drink water, soda anything to take the thirst away.  Then I would wake up 2 hours later having to use the bathroom, this went on several weeks until my Doctor told me to get tested for diabetes.  Sure enough thats what was what was wrong with me.  There is no else in my family that has diabetes I am one of 5 children and none of them have diabetes.  My mother and father do not have diabetes.  Where did I get from??????  Seroquel is responsible I am going to my Doctor today 6/7/04 and try to get off this bad, ugly pill.  Don't stay on it like I did It will kill you.  sad

Re: Well something happened when I started seroquel

this drug i stopped taking last night cause i had an flash of light coupled with a sudden sharp ringing in my ears and lightheadedness. my legs and arms twitch uncontrollably, this stuff is killing me, seriously, i'm afraid to sleep, i have to see the doctor in the morning  I quit taking this stuff after lastnights dose and the twitching and lightheadedness/flash of light I had. my pulse has been racing all night, it JUST HAPPENED AGAIN!!!

seriously, please don't take this drug, people, it no doubt has harmed me

drug companies need to stop making these horrible drugs, i don't understand how the FDA passes them!!! almost everyone i hear of has horrible side effects after prolongwd use.

ive only been on it for two weeks, to help me sleep(100/200mg) and 25mg during the day for stress

Re: Well something happened when I started seroquel

My 15-yr. old daughter, who has been taking Lexapro, was having trouble sleeping and was prescribed Seroquel yesterday. She took her first dose last night, 1/2 of a 100mg. tablet. She seemed to sleep okay in the night, then was very groggy all morning, and around noon, passed out just before lunch for about 10 seconds... Quite frightening! Has anyone heard of such a sensitive reaction? She thought it was her cigarette smoking - which she promptly promised to quit (at least one good thing!)... I've got a call in to her Doc, but awaiting a reply.

Re: Well something happened when I started seroquel

i was on seroquel for over a year at 300 mg...this pill caused me to grind my teeth down to the nerves which has cost me over $8000 to get crowns, it caused excruciating foot pain were i could hardly walk without having to curve my feet, and other problems too many to talk about. I finally had enough of it and just took myself off of it, 2 shrinks didnt want me to get off of it at the time...too bad...after several weeks after taking myself off, i had no pain in my feet, my cholesterol levels were normal, my increase in blood sugars were lower, and i stopped grinding my teeth..and my agitation was gone...some of my friends take it and dont have problems, some of my friends have had the same problems ive experienced....please be careful, watch for side effects, get a drug prescription book explaining sideeffects of these psych drugs, and tell your shrink about them, and dont take NO for an answere.....

Re: Well something happened when I started seroquel

I was depressed and suicidal about my job sitaution and because I couldn't get over a break up from over a year before. I finally checked myself into a mental hospital after 7 years of never going to the doctor, and they prescribed me Seroquel and Lexapro. Previously, I would shake and jitter and get nervous extremely fast, back down from every confrontation, and completely freak out because of anything. While I'm not sure what one is causing what, ever since i've been out of the hospital, I have noticed drastic improvements. I am never nervous about anything, i'm usually confident and not depressed, things like new jobs, first dates, screaming matches, self defense and generally anything else that is stressfull now seems to bounce off of me. While there are many good things I can say about seroquel, there's also a few bad things. Ever since I started taking seroquel, I can not stop eating everything in sight, I am not allowed to have a drink of alcohol (as defined by my doctor), sometimes I feel as if the seroquel has worn off and I get slightly dizzy. Mostly, I have only good things to say about Seroquel, except damnit... where's the cheeze wiz?

Re: Well something happened when I started seroquel

PLEASE....PLEASE......PLEASE.......Don't let any doctors prescribe seroquel to your children without doing alot of research yourself.  My son has had major behavior issues and I do see the need for extensive counseling. With that said he is also 10 yrs. old and it bothered me that within 1/2 hr. of first visit with psychiatrist he was able to diagnose depression and put him on zoloft.  It made him feel sick all the time so we had him taken off.  When he was taken off the med. he was at a behavioral center at the time the doctors then put him on lexapro.  Unfortunately my son's outbursts of rage were still uncontrollable. The doctors decided to give him another med. of which also made him sick so we had him taken off it.  The doctor's then suggested seroquel which they claimed was a very low dosage and a mood stabilizer.  It's been about 6 weeks now that he's been on this med.  Not only has it made him feel lousy of which we kept telling the doctors, but the other night he had uncontrollable twitching of his whole body, and breathing difficulties.  It was terrible.  My son feels so frustated.  We called a doctor at Loma Linda and we told her we wanted him off the med. She said we could stop it cold turkey, and we did.  My son had to be taken to emergency and given benadryl to calm him.  This happened a few days ago and the twitching continues, (his whole body).  Now we have to be giving him benadryl every 6 hrs.  It helps to calm him but doesn't take away the symptoms completely.  I pray that this drug hasn't affected my son for the rest of his life..... The most frustrating is that we kept calling the doctors saying he wasn't feeling well, dizzy, lightheaded, alot of urinating, etc.  and they kept telling us that it couldn't be the med. because he was on such a low dose, and to keep him on it that it would take about 6 wks for his body to adjust.  I should have been a better advocate for my son.  My husband and I feel so guilty about ever putting him on any meds. or sending him to a behavior center.  It seems that all the kids there are put on these type of drugs.  PARENTS BEWARE.........Please don't make the same mistake we did.  It could affect your child for the rest of their lives.....

Re: Well something happened when I started seroquel

Hi,

You might want to get a copy of a book titled, "IS THIS YOUR CHILD?", by Doris Rapp, MD and look through the many, many case examples of her patients to see if you find your son's behavior in any or many of them as I did (thankfully, he hasn't done many of the really awful things listed in there).  I have come to the conclusion that my son's problems with depression, and sometimes nasty and aggressive behavior is caused by mold in our apartment (it occurs in several places in our bathroom, and around the frames of our windows and sliding glass door ~ I believe the reason for the mold growth down here is because the clothing dryer exhaust for 6 families/apartments for over 30 years has been vented into the attic-space above our ceiling and probably causing a wonderland of mold-growth up there which gets down into our living space through our heating and air conditioning vents ~ it should be vented to the outdoors instead).  Maybe we both can learn something here from each other.  My husband insists that the mold is not causing my son's health problems and refuses to absorb any of the information that I have shown him to prove my point.  It's called a "brain allergy".  He insists that what he needs is to go to a psychiatrist.  I'm going to print your posting and read it to him in yet another effort to convince him that though it sounds nice and systematic to take the route you did...it usually doesn't work.  What we really need to do is move and get my son away from this mold.  Anyway, that book is on sale on amazon.com for about $12.  In my opinion, it is so packed with useful information, it should cost a whole lot more.  If you want, you can let me know some of the things he does, and I can look through some of the examples and maybe send you a few pages in an email.  Thanks for sharing your experience...and I hope my information is helpful to you, too.

Re: Well something happened when I started seroquel

My daughter took S. for a few months last year and she "puffed up like a puffer fish".  She still hasn't lost the weight - after almost a year - and I wonder whether she should get lab work done to see if this terrible drug has marred her in some way.  I don't think she was diagnosed with diabetes but I do know her lab work didn't look so good last year.  And I know I was scared when she went on it because I LOST my only son to Zyprexa.  He died of profound hyperglycemia and I spend a lot of time testifying before the FDA, etc., trying to get them to ban or severely limit this dangerous, lethal class of drugs....to no avail.  Too much money at stake for Pharma.

I hope if you are on any of these drugs that you will go OFF so as not to end up with diabetes or death.

Re: Well something happened when I started seroquel

My 13 yr.old son is currenlty on Seroquel.  He has also been on Zyprexa and Abilify in the past.  His doctor has never ordered any tests and I don't know how to go about getting some done or what to ask for.  He has been in counseling for almost 4 years and on a ton of different meds, but it seems to me that he's getting worse instead of better.  Any suggestions?  Right now he is in DFS custody because of his anger outbursts and is waiting for placement into a group home.  I can't take him off of anything myself, but would like some information that I could pass on to his case worker so that he might be able to be taken off of his meds or at least taken to another doctor.

Re: Well something happened when I started seroquel

While on a combination of seroquel, ativan, trileptal and celexa, I developed severe muscle twitches, contractions, convulsions, eyes jerking, muscle incoordination, fell down repeatedly, ears ringing, nausea, vomitting, profuse sweating. In December I ended up in the ER and the psych hospital. They discontinued the ativan and seroquel immediately and tapered the celexa and trileptal and the symptoms increased. I ended up back in the ER in March.  The ER and family doctor told me to discontinue all chemicals. and they said it was serotonin syndrome followed by serotonin withdrawal. My neuromuscular system was totally out of whack. My liver was not working right, I had hyperglycemia, high cholesterol, tacycardia, drenching sweats, eyes couldn't focus, high blood pressure..

I was also hospitalized in 2004 for a suicide attempt and also for pneumonia and gallbladder problems (I was on lamictal, ativan and celexa then, plus oxygen and antibiotics). I was in isolation for 9 days because the symptoms (profuse drenching sweats, coughing blood and decreased oxygen capacity) led them to believe I had tuberculosis. They discovered I had a partially paralyzed diaphragm which apparently happened shortly after they started me on zoloft. The panic attacks started after that and then my first suicide attempt.

Then the merry-go-round of psych meds. The mood stabilizers helped the agitation/mania, but they never got a handle on the depression and it only worsened, leading to a serious attempt in 2004.

I am currently off all chemicals, including all packaged foods with preservatives. My liver was sluggish, I had hyperglycemia, migraines, allergies. It is all better now. My mood is stable but I have anxiety since I lost my job as a result of this nightmare. So the only chemical I am taking now is ativan only as needed for severe anxiety. I am healthier than I have been in 10 years since starting these meds.

Re: Well something happened when I started seroquel

I have been bipolar for 34 years. I have been on seroquel for less than a year and I have been diagnosed with diabetes, triglicerides of 6000. My psychiatrist hurriedly made me sign a waver about seroquel and diabetes but he won't change my meds. I have sever high blood pressure, my sugar is out of control I take insulin in six shots a day! I am medicaid pending and they will not listen to me. I have asked my endocrinoligist to suggest another med with no response. I feel like I am dying. I have heart palpitations, confusion, dizziness, etc. I have liver damage now. What can I do? I am also on prozac, kolonipin, and bloodpressure meds also. All these things have been diagnosed since seroquel, but I can't just quite taking it. I am addicted to it.

Re: Well something happened when I started seroquel

I have a friend in prison who had been taking Seroquel and Risperdal.  The warnings actually state that diabetes may be a result of taking them.   Two years into it, he developed diabetes.  He had discussed it with the doctor who admitted that diabetes was one of the warnings.      He would like to take part in one of the national law suits that have been filed on behalf of all of you people.     I am desperately trying to find an attorney who is handling one of these suits that will accept his case while in prison.   He has all of his medical records documented and has been told by the doctor that he definitely has a case.    PLEASE, if anyone on these drugs is taking part in one of these suits, please post the name and address of the attorney.     Thank you very much.

I would suggest you go the Medline web site and put in key words relating to your problem.  You should be able to find abstracts to articles which can help you:

Re: Well something happened when I started seroquel

I was on seroquel A.k.A garbage for three years.  They had me on the maxium dose of 800mg/day.  All idid was sleep and eat for the first two years sleeping 16hrs a day and eating everthing i could get my hands on.  I gained 100lbs and aquired other heath problems like high blood pressure and also contracted diabetes.  For anyone thinking of taking this crap i would think twice, this stuff is a death sentence.
