Neurontin, which is known generically as Gabapentin, may be linked to suicide and suicide attempts. Neurontin is prescribed for epilepsy but has been prescribed for numerous off label uses. Neurontin was approved for sale in the mid-1990s as a treatment for epileptic seizures. However, it is believed that approximately 80 percent of all Neurontin prescriptions were filled for unapproved medical conditions.

If you or a loved one was injured by Neurontin, please complete the free case inquiry form on the right side of this page.

Re: they are having lawsuit for neurontin

I just realized I am having side effects from Neurontin.  I was put on it for Diabetic Neuropathy.  I have had personality changes and feeling depressed.  My doctor has me on anti-depressants!  Maybe I would not need them if I was not so drugged.  I am only 37 and mad!  I know the Pharmaceutical industry is getting us all in trouble!! :x  :x  :x  :x

Re: they are having lawsuit for neurontin

I know this is lengthy and is my first time but I really need some direction in this.  The attorney I contacted  said they were only taking cases concerning suicides as a result of the drug.  Well that wouldn't help me very much would it?
I was first prescribed Neurontin and Serzone in 2000, for low back and leg pain.  I began experiencing severe confusion, depression, memory loss, stuttering, dizziness, loss of balance, etc.  One day I was attempting to go to work and felt weak and confused.  I walked down the steps and back up again several times and didn't know why.  The doctor said it was the Serzone and discontinued it.  The confusion and memory loss continued but just not as severe.  I eventually took myself off the Neurontin because of the way it made me feel.
In January of 2003, I was put back on the Neurontin (2000 mg a day)for the same diagnosis following a fall.  Although the memory loss and confusion never left from the first usage of the drug, I became so depressed this time around, I only left the house for doctor's appointments and church.  I am a Pastor and kept this from my congregation until this year.
At times I talked about giving up.  I won't say I was suicidal but I kept telling my wife that I now understood why people gave up and committed suicide or left their families and became homeless.  2003 was the worst year of my life.
I had episodes where my family told me about things I would do and I have no recollection of any of it.
There are times when I am up preaching and for several seconds go blank.  This is not normal for me.
I now take 1200 mg a day but cannot really say whether I am taking it for pain relief or because of the wide effects I experienced trying to get off of it this time around.  I really feel it has messed up my life. I am unemployed and when I try to do work on my own I get confused doing the paperwork.  I still experience the walking back and forth in a confused state and not knowing why I am going someplace or am in a place.  I still have all the side effects I mentioned except the blankouts.
Can anybody help?

Re: they are having lawsuit for neurontin

I have been on Neurontin since 1996, and have had problems since day one. But until recently I didn't know it was due to the neurontin.
I was put on it for chronic pain, and muscle twitches in my legs. It does seem to help the pain anyway.
I have experienced short and long term memory loss, severe depression, I almost commited suicide about 4 years ago, and still have tendencies. Terrible mood swings, dizziness, headaches, I have fallen several times when I first started taking it also. The list goes on.
I recently went to see my neurologist for a list of symptoms I have had for about 6 years, and never was addressed fully. He felt that I was suffering from some type of complex partial seizures. What I didn't understand is why he sent me to my family doctor, so she could order an EEG. He wrote her a letter telling her that he felt that it was "some type of complex partial seizures", which I do have a copy of.
A friend told me that the neurontin could actually be causeing the seizures, but hey I am no doctor.
The EEG did come back normal, but was told by the technician that it was because they didn't induce a seizure at the time of the test.
I feel the neurontin does help with the pain to a degree, but this thing has me scared. I can't just stop taking the neurontin from what I have been told by my doctor. So what do I do?
Should I contact a lawyer myself? Where do I start? Confused and scared on this end.

Re: they are having lawsuit for neurontin

I took Neurontin for RSD( Reflex Sympathy Distrophy which changed my mood and last winter I stayed very depressed and stayed in my bed most of winter depressed. It has not changed or helped my condition at all. I drop things all the time, and can't even remember while I'm talking what I'm even talking about, I loose my train of thought. This is a very bad drug. If you are on it, I suggest you get off of it.

Re: they are having lawsuit for neurontin

My husband was a victim of Neurontin.  He was on it for over 3 years and I found him in July 2004, he put a bullet through his head.  I just found out after reading the sites that my husband had all of the side effects they listed.  I had complained to doctors and they did not listen.  My husband was not a suicidal person and he was given neurontin for one of the NON_APPROVED usages for RSD.  Does anyone know if I have a case, what the statute of limitations are?  We lived in California at the time and now the kids and I live in New Mexico.  Anyone on this horrible drug see your doctor or a new doctor and GET OFF OF IT and look on the list to see if your illness is an actual approved usage or if it's one of the NON APPROVED usages put out by the maker of the drug.  Do you know that some of the things they said neurontin was good for in lab tests showed the same benefit of a placebo.  Yes, a placebo.    Does anyone have the information I'm looking for?  Thanks, Blondie

Re: they are having lawsuit for neurontin

Rose 8644,
Are you still suffering from RSD?  My husband had it since 2000.  Please do not use neurontin, talk to your doctor.  My husband ended up killing himself from the depression and other problems it caused.  On a good note, I saw a really great show on Miracle Diagnosis a few months ago.  A friend of mine and my husbands who had RSD was on tv.  She had been in a wheel chair and in pain for about 15 years.  They found a cure.  I believe she has a website called For Grace.  Please look her up.  She is walking around without all the pain and the wheelchair.  I know from watching my husband how painful RSD is and how people just don't believe you.  I understand.  If you need a friend, please email me.

Does anyone on this blog suffer from a speech impediment caused by neurontin even after you stopped taking the drug?

Re: they are having lawsuit for neurontin

I was on Gabapentin for two weeks and began having memory lapses, rapid/irregular heartbeat;I had about TWENTY of the side-effects listed for Neurontin.

Thankfully, my Psychopharmacologist took me off of this poison.

ALL medications have side-effects, but psychotropics and neuroleptics, all drugs that are designed to change and modify behavior have a TON of somatic side-effects BECAUSE they DIRECTLY effect so many other parts of the brain.

Wish psychotropics could be designed that were more, I don't know, specific in their action!

For the recent past, now and the future, drugs that have to pass the blood-brain barrier are going to keep on causing all kind of uncomfortable to incapacitating side effects.

You'd think that since the Human Genome project mapped all of our code, that an army of Genetecists could be identifying MORE genes FASTER (their functions) so that better  MEDICINES could be designed.

And what about that "big uproar" over "designer medications," that in theory, work with an individual's physiology?

All talk.

Been on about TWENTY psychotropics and neuroleptics over the decades and some of these drugs WORK WELL (for Panic Disorder and OCD)-But the side-effects some of these toxins have!!!

ELATED to be off of the neurontin.   I just hope that there are no long-term effects from taking this drug, regardless that I was only on it for 2 1/2 weeks; The Gabapentin hit me HARD regardless of the short time I was one it.

Re: they are having lawsuit for neurontin

Is it too late for a lawsuit? I just found this site.  Have all the side effects listed, and have been off the drug for about a 14 months.  I have disc degenerative disease, the lumbar discs are suffering, fibro, CFIDS, and was born without a hip socket on the left side (which was "repaired" in June, 2006).

Was put on Neurontin when it first came out, and was on it until Lyrica came out last spring.  I have attributed the awful shaking, memory problems, et. all, to the fibro and CFIDS - guess not, huh?  When I get chilled just a tiny bit, stressed, tired, whatever - I begin to shake so bad you can see it on my entire body.  I have trouble just typing on here as my fingers jump around and misbehave most of the time.

I live in Tucson, AZ - can anyone give me some advice ??
