Accutane, intended indicated for the treatment of severe, recalcitrant, nodular acne, has been linked with several serious side effects, including serious birth defects and suicide. Accutane, or Isotretinoin, is a retinoid that is related to retinoic acid and retinol, or Vitamin A. Isotretinoin inhibits sebaceous gland function and keratinization. Accutane treatment for 15 to 20 weeks results in complete and prolonged remission of acne is most patients. Sometimes, a second course of treatment is needed.

In addition to birth defects and suicide, Parker Waichman Alonso Mark LLP is investigating Accutane cases involving inflammatory bowel disease, crohn’s disease, colitis, loss of vision, loss of hearing and growth disc problems. If you or a loved one has been injured by Accuntane please complete the case inquiry form on the right side of this page for a free evaluation.

Now I have Ulcerative Colitis

I started taking Accutane in June of 1998.  Less than a year after I was off of my first treatment I ended up with rectal bleeding and loose stools.  These are symptoms of a particularly nasty colon disorder which could eventually require surgical removal of my colon.  I was unaware that Accutane could cause this disease.  After 2 more cycles of Accutane and a few years later I was finally diagnosed with full blown ulcerative colitis and now I muct take gobs of medicine to keep it under control.  I'm very upset because I had no idea that taking the "miracle drug" for acne sufferers would result in me perhaps losing my colon.  Only now, after it is too late am I aware of the damage that Accutane has done to my body.

Re: Now I have Ulcerative Colitis

Parker & Waichman, the law firm who administers this site, is looking into cases where Accutane users then developed ulcerative colitis.  You should contact them.  They can be reached at www.yourlawyer.com or by calling them at 1-800-LAW-INFO (1-800-529-4636).

I hope you're able to get the colitis under control.  Best of luck to you.

Re: Now I have Ulcerative Colitis

Hello Ziggy 1979,
I strongly suggest you look at a probiotic called VSL#3.  Here is the website www.questcor.com
You take one packet a day by mixing the powder into a juice or yogurt.  It really helps intestinal inflammation, and it doesn't have teh side effects of chemical medicines.
Good luck

Re: Now I have Ulcerative Colitis

Hello!

My son started taking accutane December 1998, and was diagnosed with severe ulcerative colits November 2002. (He had symptoms for approx 6 months before he saw a gastroenterologist).   He is doing well despite taking 10 pills a day.  I sure wish that I would have known the possible side effects that could show up years after taking the drug.
