Vioxx and TIA/Strokes

Hello everyone.  I had a strange experience where I had a clot in the lower area of my left arm; it cut off circulation to my last three fingers on my hand.  I had been hospitalized the night before because of symptoms pointing to a stroke.  The health care people gave me intravenous blood thinners- but this seemed to have little effect.  They had to give me morphine injections for the pain in my arm and hand. They said it was neuropathy.  All the skin on those fingers fell off- it looked like a severe case of frost bite between the swelling and the blackened skin.  I have permanent damage to the nerves in my "pinky" finger.  This all happened in June of 2004.  I had had a "mild" stroke, and my life has changed forever!  I suffer from extreme fatigue, balance issues and suffer from anxiety now- I have never had any history of any of these concerns prior.
I am 36 years old and had been prescribed Vioxx in relation to a MVA compression injury to my left hip.  My doctor prescribed it after almost a year from the initial injury, and only after 10 months of physiotherapy offered little relief.  I had been given Naproxen as well but had little relief from the pain in my back and leg.  The vioxx was a gift! I was taking it for almost two years and had a TIA when I had flown a short flight to a neighboring province in Canada- aprox. 2 hour flight.  I believe that I developed a clot on the flight and suffered dizziness and nausea within 12 hrs of the flight.  I did not know at the time I had had a "mini" stroke, that wasn't discovered until I had an MRI a month later.  At the time (November 2001) I was still taking Vioxx and the association was not made- instead it was blamed on my TypeI diabetes and hypertension; hypertension had not been a prior concern.  I am a diabetic, and as a result I see a doctor on a regular basis to keep an eye on things.
I am basically drawing my own conclusion on this because diabetes is such an easy scapegoat for doctors to use,  everything medical that occurs is attributed to my being a diabetic.  Frustrating when you have suspicions of other causes and everyone around within the medical profession is too busy covering their collective professional ass that they do not want to entertain any ideas put forth by the patient.  It seems a sad state of affairs when lawyers are the only professionals willing to listen.

Re: Vioxx and TIA/Strokes

told me that he was going to put down the cause of my sped up heart rate and palputations was due to early stages of heart disease.  I asked him repeatly about vioxx and he said he knew nothing about it.  But like my lawyer said if he truely believed it was heart disease he wouldn't have told me I didn't need to come back unless I had other problems.  But now anytime I have any chest pains or my heart decides to jump up for a little while I'm stuck spending hundreds of dollars for tests to make sure everything is OK.  I'm scare to take any prescriptions except the three I take now.  One for the heart the other two for nerve damage(I have radicupathies and mylopathies, not sure how you spell it)

Re: Vioxx and TIA/Strokes

My mother-in-law took vioxx for over a year, I am not sure when she quit taking it, but she has been hospitalized 4 times in last year, same symptoms everytime, dizziness, nausea, blurred vision, blood pressure erratic, and they still can not find the cause.  I am wondering if this might not be due to taking the vioxx, do the symptoms continue after one quits taking vioxx?  She also has been having memory problems in last year, it seems to me that she is having mini-strokes, this last episode left her speech very slurred for a couple of hours.

Re: Vioxx and TIA/Strokes

I have researched this and I understand that actually it has a long lasting effects and can affect you for years later.... and because brain tissue does not recover- each mini stroke has permanent affect
