now I'm scared

 I have chronic pain, as well as RA. I was given Celebrex today. But after reading some of these posts, I am thinking I will not take it. I have a family history of heart disease with my dad dying at a young age, my mom had HBP as well as cancer.

My question is, WHY do doctors still prescribe this med with these kinds of risks? With my history, there is no way I want to take the chance and now I am wondering why my doc, knowing the history, would even give this to me.

Re: now I'm scared

Hmmmm...Just got my freebees for a tennis elbow. Now I am not sure if I should take celebrex. Doc said not to worry as this is all hype. But, is it worth it? Lot of posts on here are scary. There needs to be further testing as I see it. Think I will try advil...but now I guess that's bad too. See how this stuff will drive you crazy. I wonder how many people suffered heart problems, say, after drinking a Pepsi? I know that's a silly comparison, but now I just don't think I will take it. Going Crazy in N.Y.

Re: now I'm scared

As a Celebrex user that suffered a near fatal heart attack (which I sincerely believe was caused by the Celebrex), I can relate to your concerns.  In the last year I have asked myself the same question, i. e., if I had known the risks of Celebrex, would I still have taken it?  Probably at the time I would have chosen to, but in retrospect, NO WAY would I touch the stuff.  I disagree with the FDA panel that indicates it is not proven to be more effective than other "safer" drugs, I had tried them all, and for me Celebrex was much more effective than the others.
It has been over 14 months since my heart attack, and although I have to take 15 medications a day now for my badly damaged heart, none of them is a pain killer and I have had no arthritis pains! (the cardiologist immediately took me off Celebrex when I had the heart attack)  Don't ask me to explain it, I don't understand it myself.

Re: now I'm scared

I've been on Celebrex for a month now for RA.  Before taking it, I could barely type, let alone do other manual jobs that took any amount of dexterity.  I can now type, give my wife massages, wash dishes and any number of other things that have been impossible for the last few years.  I see my doctor once a month and he always checks my BP and gives me an EKG.  I hope I don't develop any of the symptoms I've read about here because, as far as I'm concerned, this is a true miracle drug!

Re: now I'm scared

I think that is a good way to go.  I had been on it for two years, double dose, and then had the heart attack.  In looking backwards, my GP was unhappy that he did not notice that in the few months before my heart attack, my BP went up dramatically (I had always had LOW blood pressure).  Properly monitored, he feels it was a warning that was ignored, especially now that we know that it appears that people on double dose, and after a couple of years, the risk goes up dramatically.
