On May 15, 2006, the FDA issued a press release stating: "Based on this scientific and epidemiological data suggesting that ReNu with MoistureLoc may increase susceptibility to Fusarium, Bausch & Lomb has decided to permanently remove the ReNu with MoistureLoc product worldwide." The recall followed Bausch & Lomb's conclusion that the product's formula may increase the risk of fusarium keratitis, a serious fungal eye infection.Bausch & Lomb, Inc. and the FDA both acknowledged there is a problem in the chemical properties of ReNu with MoistureLoc after testing confirmed that the solution allows a polymer film to form around the Fusarium fungus, preventing the disinfectant in the product from killing the fungus.

An estimated 30 million persons in the United States wear soft contact lenses; the annual incidence of microbial keratitis is estimated to be 4-21 per 10,000 soft contact lens users. Fungal keratitis is a condition more prevalent in warm climates. First-line treatment includes topical and oral antifungal medications; patients who do not respond to medical treatment usually require surgical intervention, including corneal transplantation. These infections are not transmitted from person to person. If not timely treated, Fusarium keratitis may lead to complete destruction of the cornea and loss of the eye itself.

Re: Talking with other people!

No, I can't wear contacts ever again in my life due to this!!! I have eye "issues" at least a few times a week. I would give anything to be able to wear contacts again...i miss them soooo much sad  I wish I never bought that stupid solution. I only bought it because I was going on a cruise and it was alittle bottle, perfect for travel only .99 cents and look at what I have lost because of it. Oh well, can't do anything now, damage is done. I was curious though, did B & L contact you to offer this to you? I only heard from them when they wanted my solution!!

Re: Talking with other people!

Hola,

Hello,
I am a girl of Spain. Also I am affected by the mushroom fusarium, at first I was seen by 3 doctors who were saying that it dyed a conjuntivitis, I talked each other with eyewashes but the eye did not treat me, I was to my doctor of payment and he extracted the serious corneal illness, said that it was very serious and that they had me to treat and to think of saving the eye, that was in May, 2006, I entered and they treated me as a bacterium, since, on having been a bearer of glasses, they suppose that these are the common infections, since in Spain the alarm of these cases came when I was already deposited, gave me the discharge and I continued with the same treatment, drops every hour, but it did not improve, the eye deteriorated and I went again to the doctor, again I entered and they scraped me the eye and extracted me watery humor, cultivated it and there appeared this damned mushroom, Fusarium, estube 18 days deposited by means of drops, pills, medicines in blood.. .. right now I continue with the treatment and I am not even treated, it is more, in the mornings I notice that I have the worst eye and during the day is clearing up but I even feel inconveniences.
Would I like to know what medicines were used those who are damaged by this mushroom and those who do not know that to do I might help with what I go, ok?

A greeting.

Re: Talking with other people!

So Im wondering how everyone is doing in their respective cases.  My medical records are finally all with Parker and I am working on having my doctor revisit the problem and see if he might not think that I did have the Fusarium Keratitis rather than an acanthamoeba.  For two of the three and a half months I was sick with this infection they treated me for and told me it was fungal.  I think it had to be this exact problem.  Anyway, how is everyone else doing?  I still need the transplant surgery as I see very poorly from that eye.

Re: Talking with other people!

Coxxy, yep I'm in the same position.  I take it you got a letter as well?  I just don't know how they would determine it was the fungal infection so far late in the game.  It's like having  a cold, do you think if you went to the DR and asked if it was a cold that you had a few months back do you think he would say yes?  I'm thinking about standing where I'm at.  Don't know if thats the best decision or not.

Re: Talking with other people!

So my doctor did call me back and said that it very well could have been  the Fusarium Keratitis that I had.  He said that toward the end it presented more like an acanthameoba simply because he couldnt kill it off with anything.  But he said that the drops that did kill it in the end would have killed off anything.  I had to order those soapy drops from California.  I think thats what he was talking about.  Anyway, I dont have it in writing yet but he feels that it definitely could have been the fungal infection.

Re: Talking with other people!

I was diagnosed with Fusarium Kertatitis, in May, 2005.  As a result of this infection I actually lost all vision in my eye.  The infection was so bad that I am now required to where an artiificial shell over my left eye.   This is a horrible infection, I was sick for over 9 months...I had surgeries performed every week for 3 months, to attempt to get rid of the infection.   Due to having monocular vision, my depth perception is off, I had to trade off my SUV for a car, due to the blind spot and not having any periphal vision on my left side.  I was not aware until April, 2006 that B & L ReNu w/Moistureloc was the cause, my physicians stated that this infection was so rare that they really had no explanation for how I contracted it.    This is a horrible infection and my sympathies go out to anyone who has or is experiencing it.

Re: Talking with other people!

KJ,

Parker & Waichman only filed a class action for people without an injury - for individuals who need to recover the costs to be medically monitored and treated.

All our clients who are injured are represented individually for their claims for personal injuries - and each clients case will be separately filed.

Re: Talking with other people!

Hi guys it's me ouchmyeyehurts but because I couldn't remember the password of my old name I had to change my name. smile

I was wondering if any one had any updates?  I have been in the dark for a few months now.

I did find a website that lists the cases filed (if this is in violation of the rules then please remove)

http://iapps.courts.state.ny.us/webcivil/FCASMain

Your going to want to enter the security code and then you'll be brought to another screen.  There you will select party search and then enter bausch and lomb and click defendent.

Go and see if your case is filed or not, mine isn't and I have been in this for over a year.

Re: Talking with other people!

Hi, I don't have any updates either. I did go to that site and my case was not filed. I spoke to them a month ago and they were supposed to be ready to file my case???? My guess is that there are so many cases? How are you feeling? Any lingering eye issues? I still am complaining about wearing glasses!!! My eyes are very sensitive and I have dry eye...which can be painful, aggravating and interupting. I just want this to be over...maybe go in for surgery on my eyes.
