Levaquin 500mg (levofloxacin)

Has anyone else out there experienced severe reactions from taking Levaquin 500mg.  Two doctors have been stuffing me full of this med for about two weeks now and I just now found out how damaging it can be.  I also found out that it can excerbate the problem in the colon or bladder.  I have been experiencing terrible tingling, burning under my skin in the arms, chest and head.  It is driving me nuts.  It comes and goes and seems to be especially worse in the evening.  The internist told me I was hyperventilating.  I have NEVER hyperventilated my entire life...I believe he is drumming up an excuse...especially after I now know what damage this medicine has caused other people.

Anyone else out there had this problem with Levaquin? roll

Re: Levaquin 500mg (levofloxacin)

I was prescribed Levequin for an upper respiratory infection.  After taking it as prescribed I was considerably worse.  My lymph nodes were extremely swollen and remain that way, still.  I ached everywhere and particularly my feet and legs.  When I get out of bed or get up from sitting in a chair, I can hardly walk and the pain is terrible.  My tonsils were removed when I was 17 but my throat is swollen together.  I have patches of rough skin which I had never experienced before.  I can not sleep through the night and have very little energy.  A car trip to the grocery store sends me to bed.  I am so tired all of the time.  I finished two different prescriptions of this drug and my problems are so much worse and it did not help in any way.  I feel it has made me so sick that I can no longer function as I once did.  I was a vibrant 50 year old.  Now I feel as if I am 80.  My body aches all over.

Re: Levaquin 500mg (levofloxacin)

I also was prescribed Levaquin for an infection.  After I finished the prescription of 10 days, I broke out in hives and all my body became "Inflammatory".  I couldn't bend my ankles, knees, hip, elbows or wrists because of the swelling and pain.  My Lymph nodes were also swollen.  I contacted Levaquin and they say the drug cause tendonitis and that I should now see doctors for tendonitis as the tendons could rupture.  It is a known side effect and they know it. I never had one ache in my body-never had one pain in any of my joints before I took this drug.  Now I can hardly walk and it hurts to sit on a toilet and get up and down.  I turned 52 this year but now I feel 92 -                                  Thanks Levaquin!!http://www.fqresearch.org/ignorance_1.htm
http://www.askapatient.com/viewrating.asp?drug=20635&name=LEVAQUIN .......this is done in order from the top is good results and the bottom is bad results......read the lower half and you probably will want to shoot the makers of Levaquin

Some Antibiotics Linked To Tendon Rupture; Public Citizen Petitions FDA For Stronger Warnings
Targets Fluoroquinolone Class of Antibiotics: Tequin, Levaquin, Cipro, et al.
The consumer advocacy group Public Citizen filed a petition with the FDA in late August 2006 requesting that the agency order drug companies to put a "black-box" warning about the risks of tendon rupture that have been associated with a class of antibiotics known as fluoroquinolones.  Some of these antibiotics are Bristol-Myers Squibb's Tequin, Ortho-McNeil's Levaquin, and Bayer's Cipro.
The August 2006 Public Citizen petition concerning antibiotics in the fluoroquinolone class also urged the FDA to require the drug companies to send out so-called "Dear Doctor" letters regarding the stronger warning and to requires pharmacists to issue patient medication guides showing the stronger warning.
According to an August 29, 2006 Associated Press article at least one of the affected drug companies thought the current label was adequate:
Levaquin's label already "clearly states" tendon rupture can occur during or after treatment with the antibiotic, said Ambre Morley, a spokeswoman for Ortho-McNeil Inc., the Johnson & Johnson subsidiary that makes the drug.
Jennifer Corbett Dooren, of Dow Jones Newswire, reported why Public Citizen disagreed with that position in a piece published by The Wall Street Journal on August 29, 2006:
The drug labels do warn of the risk of tendon ruptures but the warning is not contained in a black-box, which is considered the FDA's toughest warning. A black box warning is in bold type and is surrounded by a black box to make it stand out. It typically appears at the top of drug labels and any advertising of products that carry black boxes must also include warning information as part of the advertisement.
Public Citizen said the tendon warning is buried in a list of possible adverse reactions to the drugs and is not adequate to warn consumers and health-care providers of the risk. The current tendon warning was added after Public Citizen petitioned the agency asking for such a warning in 1996.
According to the August 2006 Public Citizen petition, the antibiotic-induced tendon ruptures have occurred in the Achilles tendon, the rotator cuff (shoulder), the biceps, the hand, and the thumb. The petition states that one causation theory is that fluoroquinolones are toxic to tendon fibers and may decrease blood supply in tendons that already have a limited blood supply.
As an aside, in April 2006 Bristol-Myers said that it would stop selling Tequin for other reasons.

There is a book called Bitter Pills where the guy wrote a book on Levaquin and how it almost killed his wife.

Re: Levaquin 500mg (levofloxacin)

I was prescribed Levaquin several years ago. I suffered from Bi Lateral Achiles Rupture as a result. Has anyone sued Ortho-McNeil/Johnson&Johnson?

Re: Levaquin 500mg (levofloxacin)

I would suggest you go the Medline web site and put in key words relating to your problem.  You should be able to find abstracts to articles which can help you:

Good luck, Harold Boxenbaum, Ph.D.

P.S. Also do a google search with key words including patient package insert, and malpractice

Re: Levaquin 500mg (levofloxacin)

I have been tearing tendons, sometimes in my sleep after taking levaquin.  It has been about 7 months since last taking the drug and I still have pain every day.  Mostly in my knees.  The only real relief I have found it through Prolotherapy.  Has anyone had problems as long as me and when does it end?
