Astra Zeneca’s popular schizophrenia drug Seroquel has been linked with a high incidence of diabetes, hyperglycemia and other blood sugar disorders. Seroquel is in the class of drugs called atypical antipsychotics, which are a newer class of antipsychotics touted as having a lower incidence of blood sugar disorders than the older medications such as Haldol and Thorazine. Seroquel was approved by the FDA in 1997.

Data from a study that was reported at a conference of the International Society for Pharmacoepidemiology in Philadelphia August 23 and 24, 2003 showed that patients on Seroquel had 3.34 times as many cases of diabetes as those on older antipsychotic drugs. The study of 19,878 U.S. military veterans between October 1998 and October 2001 indicated that Seroquel and other members of the new class of anti-psychotic drugs posed a higher risk of diabetes. The effect was most pronounced with Seroquel.

Signs of diabetes?

My husband is bi-polar and has been taking seroqeul since October of 2000. He recently has developed some symptoms that are worrisome, such as, frequent urination, eye strain (may be due to the lithum he takes), and extreme increase in thirst. He takes 1000 mg to sleep at night. He also takes ambien, tegretol, buspar and clonazpem. I was wondering if these are signs that he's developing diabetes. He is consulting his physican tommorow but I'd like to here what you guys think. (We all know how much physicans like to listen too you)

Re: Signs of diabetes?

I too took seroquel for awhile, for sleep is what I thought, until these attorneys told me about the side effects, especially diabetes, and that runs in my family!  I was surprised the Dr. would give it to me, but I took it for a few months, and when I quit, she gave me Resperdal.  But I just read something terrible about that too! And after quitting Resperdal, they started getting better again.
I've been on these different meds for a yr. now.  It sounds like they r all bad for us.  but, if my Dr. discovered I quit taking one, she'd prescribe, and give me another similar, and said I was bipolar.  The first time she told me, I just brushed it off, cause I really didn't know what it was.  This last visit, she said that's why I can't keep a job, and now i quess I believe her.
But I too stay thirsty, frequent bathroom trips, and constantly worry about diabetes, but I pray he does not have that, nor ever will!  It's been 2 yrs since I tested, but u should regularly.  Good luck!

Re: Signs of diabetes?

I was on Olanzapine maybe a year. I was playing golf at an extremely hot time of the year. I was thirsty all the time. At one point I was drinking upwards of three gallons of milk a day plus anything else I could drink. I felt that if I couldn't get a drink I would die. When I had to go to the bathroom very little would come out. I went on this way until Feb 2002.  I went into the hospital related to anxiety. When I was in my doctor had bloodwork done and found out that I had blood glucose levels in the three hundreds. Normal blood glucose levels are 80 to 120. Anything over 200 is considered diabetic - hyperglycemia. I suggest you two IMMEDIATELY go see a doctor and have him do a glucose monitor stick. Then have him do blood work for hemoglobin etc. Extreme thirst is a warnig sign of diabetes. Diabetes even if temporary is nothing to play around with. I just got an email from Parker and Waichman that said they are looking only for people in which olanzapine caused diabetes.

Funny I never had diabetes before I went on olanzapine and when I came off the olanzapine in Feb 2002 it wasn't until June 2002 that I was diagnosed with no more diabetes. But my PCP says I need to check my blood glucose every week because now I have a higher chance of getting it again. I have seen my levels reach as high as 192 since I was diagnosed as no longer having diabetes. Hmmmm something is not right with Parker and Waichman.

In April of 2002 I was sitting in a Diabetes Management classroom learning how and where to take insulin shots, learning about gluccophage and was even prescribed gluccophage in May of 2002. I still have the bottle I think. I guess it never gave me diabetes eh?

Re: Signs of diabetes?

Seroquel is one of several medications in the same group that is know to cause diabetes. Be sure Psych doc has your glucose checked regularly. My doc just placed me on Seroquel because my liver enzymes were elevated with Zyprexa. He told me Seroquel is not as hard on the liver as Zyprexa is. He also said you have to weigh the benefits against the risks when considering taking a drug. Evidently our doctors feel we need the drug even more than worrying about diabetes or liver problems. In other words, we are up a creek withouot a paddle. Good luck.
