Does anyone else know of a child on Seroquel. My 9 year old stepson is on this drug, and his father and I have been fighting to get him off. He has behavioral problems but he is not schizophrenic, nor does he have delusional thought. He has gained alot of weight, has petit mal seizures, which his mother claims are a result of Asperger Syndrome (undiagnosed) and loss of bladder control. In a child with problems these symptoms seem easy to explain away. I hope we are not too late!

I have never been in a chat room before. It was my last hope.
My 15 year old stepson is on Seroquel also and I don't approve of it at all.
He was put on Seroquel against our wishes. He has only been on it for
one week. He was an average teenager until his Mom and him got in a fight and he was placed in a Mental Center. I do not think this medication is safe for children who are not have major problems. He had been on
Zoloft this summer and seemed fine to us. Now some Doctor wants him on
Seroquel and Lexapro. I think Lexapro is fine but I do not agree with
the Seroquel. My stepson's mother must not have access to the internet
to read about these medications.
One of the things bothering my stepson is he has a weight problem. Doesn't Seroquel cause weight gain?
Hope someone will chat back with me - thanks
For all intents and purposes Lexapro and Zoloft are the same. The use of antipsychotics in a 15 year old suggest that the 15 year old's moods are dangerously unstable. In many cases I've seen Seroquel has saved people's lives over the short term. Psychological testing which is usually not paid for by insurance may clarify the diagnosis and either allay some of your fears about the necessity of this medication or support your efforts to get him off.

my son has been on seroquel for almost 3 months now, he has tourettes syndrome/ocd/adhd, he is only 10 yrs. old. his psychiatrist assured us that there were NO side effects with seroquel, but since being on this medication, he has gained about 15 lbs., is winded all of the time, and gets a greyish/white tone to his face in the evenings. he was doing great on a low dose, and when we took him in for his appt. his dr. decided he wanted to up his dose to 300mg a day. even though he could see the improvemnt on the orginal 100 mg. dosing. we spent the day in the hospital yesterday with my son who has been having sever chest pains and been unable to eat due to the pain he has been having, yet they assured us that none of this is seroquel related aside fron the weight gain.
i think these companies are just out to make a buck at the expense of anyone they can prescribe these meds for. why keep raising the dosage when the intial amount was doing so well? has anyone else had any adverse effects to this drug?
I've been on Seroquel for about four years, and was diagnosed in September 2003 with Type II diabetes and hypertension. Since December I have been having more and more trouble urinating without the use of urecholine. On two occasions I have been catheterized in the hospital, draining as much as 2800cc of urine! Two weeks ago I saw a urologist (who has a fellowship in female urology and voiding dysfunctions) and learned how to self-cath, and have been doing so every three or four hours. On March 19th I had a uro-
dynamics test which showed that my bladder is just plain shot. The doctor places the blame on the combination of Seroquel and diabetes, and offers little or no hope of my ever being able to urinate again without catheterization. Since Seroquel has been implicated in the development of diabetes, as well as in this problem of urine retention, I am seriously consid-
ering suing Astra-Zeneca PLC, for failing to warn physicians of the fact that Seroquel is implicated in the development of diabetes.. Anyone else in the same boat?
I have a 6yr old son with ADHD and what else we are still trying to determine. In February his PCP put him on Seroquel to help with his behavior problems. They started him on 100mg the first night and then instructed me to increase it to 200mg on the second night, 300mg the third. We didn't make it to the second night due to a Psychotic episode that he suffered at school the following day. He was an emotional wreck and then started in with the violent behavior. This was the most violence that we had ever seen him. He completely destroyed the classroom, stated that his brain hurt, there was glass everywhere (which there wasn't any glass at all), he turned over tables and desks, broke a metal broom in mid-air, kicked hoels in a partition that was 1/2 inch thick, sat on the floor and rocked back and forth yelling how embarrassed he was and then threw things at anyone who approached him. The school was at a loss on how to help him. This went on for about 3 hours, the school thinking that they could calm him down. He was in a special contained classroom for kids like him and they finally had to call us to come in and help. I was completely shocked and terrified for my child all the way to the school. Once I got there my fear didn't get any better, I saw what my 6yr old had done and was sure that it had something to do with the Seroquel seeings as this was the only change that we had made in his medications. I immediately discontinued the Seroquel and called his physician. His physician agreed on the discontinuation of the Seroquel and then decided to send him to a child psychologist at the University of Michigan Medical Center. They were completely shocked about the use of Seroquel in my 6yr old and have now put him on Risperdal in coordination with his Lexapro, Catapres and Strattera. I work in a clinic in SW lower Michigan and I spoke to the Seroquel drug rep that comes in our office today about the affects. He doesn't believe that this drug caused this reaction and I told him flat out that he was wrong. An incident like this had not happened prior to the Seroquel and we have not had one even close to that magnitude since.
I urge anyone with a small child to seriously think about why they are giving this medication to their child and who is prescribing it. If you are to the point that your primary care physician cannot help the child anylonger with the basic drugs used in ADHD and behavior disorders, request that they send you and your child to a specialist dealing with these and worse probelms on a daily basis. And for God's sake if you belive that this or any other drug is causing adverse affects, get an IMMEDIATE appointment with the prescribing doctor and force them to change or discontinue it's use. You are your child's only advocate and you know when something is just not right.
I know I am a little long winded but I needed to share this frightening experience.
Thanks, Kim L.

I have a step grandson who has just turned 4 yrs. old on Tuesday the 25th of May. He has just been diagnosed With Bi Polar. He has also been Diagnosed with O.D.D (Obsessive Defiant Disorder) with in the last year.
He has just completed his first year of Head Start and is to return this fall.
He has only started taking Seroquel for 6 days. They started him out with 25mg. tablets twice a day, a.m & p.m. The day of his birthday He was spending the day with me in my home. His Mother instructed me to start an additional dose that day in the after noon. That brings him up to 75mg.
daily. I spent 14 hours with this 4 yr. old that day. I did not like the side effects that I witnessed that day. He was most definitely complaining of
a bad headache and he really got emotional after that afternoon dose. He was just sobbing. His face was definately flushed. This is what prompted me to look into this much further. I have been familiar with this drug because My Husband takes this same drug for a year now. He takes a 300mg. tablet every night before bed to treat his Bipolar Disorder along with Lithium 600 mg. 3 times a day. This seems to be working very well for him. However my husband is 5'10 and 210 lbs. and age 46. My grandson is only 50lbs and 43 inches tall. Which is big for his age. I was not aware that this drug is linked to Diabetes and perhaps Bladder Control problems. I am very concerned about this. I will most definately address this subject with my stepdaughter.
I have an 8 yr. old daughter that we adopted 7 yrs ago. She is bi-polar and also has reactive attachment disorder, and bulimia. she has been hospitalized 40 times. mostly for urinary infections. She will not use the toilet. She goes in her pants many times a day. Never has had a dry night. She takes 300mg. of seroquel a day for the last 2 years. She does better emotionally on this drug than any other we have tried. I am trying to figure out if the seroquel could be related to her bathroom issues. I am hearing more and more of others with this same problem. Is there a link?
Do your research...this drug is not approved for anyone under age 18!!!!!

Do "your" research doc...most of these meds are not even approved for the use of anyone under 18 and if they are not unstable before taking these meds they are at risk of becoming unstable during/after taking them!
I have a son that was on seroquel for a very very short time.He is bipolar and this med did cause extreme irritability and lashing out at others physically as well as verbally.
I invite you all that have children on this medicine to visit http://www.bpkids.org There are caretakers of kids that are bipolar ( and other disorders) that have children on this medicine and many other medicines also. They are a great group of people and will help you in any way that they can
I do not know where my son would be today if I did not find these people. Not only do they offer their help and support, there is so much information about these types of drugs.
Oh yes, as far as medicines being approved for children, you would be surprised how many are not that are still being given to kids anyway. And as far as the "low side effects",well, we were told when we put our child on zyprexa, that there was less than a 1 in a million chance of getting a permanent movement disorder with this medicine. Now, my son who is now 10 has one due to the medication.I just read last week that the 1 in a million is now thought to be as low as 1 in 20 on this class of drug
Anyway, come and join us....you don't even have to join up to read the info that others have put there, but if you have questions, they will usually answer you the same day you post
See ya there ![]()

I have been taking Seroquel for about a year now and when I was taking this drug I felt that I could not fully react or communicate properly, I had slurred speech and stuttering problems
Also when I was put on a higher dose due to my insomnia I stared seeing things that were not there I saw shadow people and I heard voices and sounds that kept me up all night
If anyone has had the same problem or similar problems reply

Your right, there isn't much research done for under 18. I have a 7 year old son that has been on Lexapro for 4 months and there has been much improvement. But now I am beginning to worry because his side affects are starting. Grinding his teeth at night and having trouble falling asleep. Is there anything out there that has been tested for those that are under 18?
My son is 8 years old and he is on seroquel. He is ADHD not schitzophrenia. I have been fighting the doctors to take him off of it. I had a bad feeling when I had to sign a release. I threatened the Doctor's office and they are now weaning him off of it.

Can anyone tell me what I can do with a teen boy (13) who takes Seroquel. My son is on 350mg. a day total and he is a complete zombie!! I am scared. They keep telling me he has all these physocitic disorders and I just dont belive it. I know he is ADHD and ODD. I want help but all they want to do is medicate him and send him home. I wanted to put him in a youth program but they wont take him because they say he is mental and the mental hospitals wont take him because they say he is behavioral and defiant. I dont know where to turn, I dont know what to do. Any suggestions??? He does take other meds. I want to take him off the seroquel. And possibly others but maybe leave him on Adderall XR.

I would suggest you go the Medline web site and put in key words relating to your problem. You should be able to find abstracts to articles which can help you:

My 13 year old daughter was prescribed Seroquel. THey had her on a total dose of 600mg in a 24 hour period. We are currently weaning her off this medication after she started cutting herself and having psychotic mood swings. THis medication has NOT been approved for the use in children by the FDA and the manufacturer does NOT recommend its use in children. NO testing has been done to establish safe dosages or determine side effects in children. THey are drugging our children instead of modifying their behavior and we are letting them.
Im a nurse and I fell for it too. I thought there wasnt a way. I was wrong. If your children are on these meds please please please start getting them off. Your school district is required to help you with these types of children. There are great behavior modification programs out there that are inaccessible to the middle class.
There is a great article in the NY Times this month about a four year old girl on depakote and seroquel and she DIED!!!

I don't know what to do. My ex husband is in the military and we got divorsed last february. We have two children together and my now 4 year old and I were very close. She called me her best friend. He got custody, not because i was unfit but the judge thought they would be beter with him because of his ability to support them better. my daughter is a very intellegent child and was ahead of all children her age, very vibrant and full of life. After her dad took her from me she got very angry and lashed out at his new wife. they took her to the doctor and she was diagnosed bipolar at 3 years old. she never displayed anything even close to those behaviors with me. two months after getting the girls my ex went overseas and they are with his wife. when i call my kids{they are 10 hours away} my daughter sometimes cant hardly talk and she seems so spaced out. she used to scream and cry when i had to hang up and beg me to come get her but now its like she doesnt realize shes talking to me. they were with me for christmas thats when i found out she was on seroquel i didnt give it to her when she was with me and she didnt act any different then i had remembered when she lived with me. except that she was different and you could tell it was the meds she did get it her first night with us and she was like a zombie and fell asleep within 20 minutes of getting the med and slept for 14 hours. someone please help me , i dont know what to do. The meds have changed her and i dont want to lose my little girl. she is not bipolar she never spent one day away from me, and all of asudden i was taken from her and couldnt even talk to her so of course she would be upset now i cant talk to them at all because their stepmom wont answer the phone. please help me god bless

Hi, yes I to have a 9yr. old that WAS taking 800mg of Seroquel daily. And I to did not like the side effects it was causing. My son has ADHD, ODD and over tones of Bipolar (so they say). He gained 35-40lbs in the last 7 months. I just stopped the meds 10 days ago and I can tell you he has had a really hard past 10 days. Throwing up, dizzy spells, headache, and feeling tired. (A couple of times he took 2 naps in one day) And honestly I see a happier kid. He was taking this med. to help him w/his mood and aggressive behavior but I never seen a difference in him while he was taking it. If any thing I noticed was his mood swings and behavior was worse. I felt bad seeing my own child suffer from these terrible withdrawals from it but I know it is for the best for him. No child should be put on this serious of meds. I will take him tomorrow to his doc. and I will tell him I took him off and I don't think he will be to happy, BUT as his mother it is my choice to have my son take it or not. As for him ever having a bladder problem, the only thing I ever noticed was he would leak urine if he did not get there fast enough. I hope this info will help you.......

wow! i am almost speechless as i read just a few of these posts about seroquel...i have an 8 year old son who is very hyper and he just does not sleep well unless he has something to help and he was taking something called atarax (very low dose) but now he is taking seroquel BUT the doctor prescribed him only 25MG for him to take at night but i only give him half of the 25 MG tablet and it helps him go to sleep which is what he has a hard time with, getting to sleep...
these doses these kids are taking are outrageous ! i would be very afraid of these types of doses.
i always, always read about any medications either of my kids take, i dont see why any child would be given these high doses like some i have read here...please be careful everyone!
dont always trust the doctors, just cause they tell you to do it does not mean its safe for your kids, or for us adults for that matter.

I CANT BELIEVE THE HIGH DOSES THESE KIDS ARE ON! MY 13 YEAR OLD SON STARTED TAKING 25 SEROQUEL 9 MONTHS AGO HE NOW TAKES 40MG WHEN HE WAS ADMITTED TO A FACILITY FOR AN EVALUATION AFTER HE HAD SOME TOUBLES AT SCHOOL AND ANGER OUTBURSTS AT HOME. HE WAS DIAGNOSED WITH ADD AND ODD. I HAVE BEEN SECOND GUESSING IT SINCE A FRIEND TOLD ME THAT SHE TOOK IT AND IT MADE HER FEEL WORSE THEN BEFORE SHE TOOK IT. SHE TOLD ME TO GET ONLINE AND DO SOME RESEARCH. SO HERE I AM. ALTHOUGH HIS BEHAVIOR HAS IMPROVED I FEEL THAT IT IS BECAUSE OF HIS OTHER MEDICATION AND WEEKLY THERAPY AND FAMILY SUPPORT. HE HAS NOT GAINED WEIGHT AND AS FAR AS BEING TIRED I THINK ITS HAD THE OPPOSITE EFFECT ON HIM, HE'S UP ALL HOURS OF THE NIGHT AND WHEN HE DOES GET TO SLEEP HE SLEEPS SO DEEP THAT ITS HARD TO WAKE HIM AND HE HAS BECOME SO PARANOID. READING ALL THE ABOVE POSTS HAS MADE ME NOTICE A LOT OF THE SAME THINGS GOING ON WITH MY SON THAT I DIDNT REALIZE UNTIL NOW. MY DECISION IS NOW MADE I WILL DEMAND THAT MY SON BE TAKEN OFF THIS MEDICATON!

My daughter is 7 and has been on seroquel for almost two months. She has severe anxiety and Dr's don't know what else. she was having some real odd behaviors at school which has landed her in an alternative school because her regular school was basically just watching her all day unable to teach her because of her behaviors. We had tried two anxiety medications that made her worse. I tried a partial inpatient hospital, a half day program for mental health. I was getting no ware. They say anxiety, maybe child schizophrenia, bi polar. finally a new Dr admits he is confused and suggest we try seroquel. We started at 25mg and worked our way up slowly to 100mg and that's as far as were going. My daughter has been doing so good it is hard to believe. the alternative school is finally able to see where she is academically. I have a appointment set up to check for diabetes because she has gained 2 1/2 pounds. Her Dr was straightforward with me on side affects. I watched closely and there has been none, but we'll see how the test go for diabetes. I'll keep posted.

i have 2 children that are prescribed seroquel. My oldest son age 12 and my daughter age 8. they have been on seroquel 3 years . My son takes it for adhd they say to work with his aderall. My daughter also has adhd however she cannot take any of the medications that they have for it . they have an opposite effect on her. instead of making her better they make her worse. Therefore they put her on seroquel. So far there has been no effects other than a little weight gain. My son was on risperdal and it caused severe weight gain and sugar diabetes. I do not want to go through this again with him and my daughter. after reading these posts it has alerted me to change there med. there may or may not be another med for them, however with the sideeffects being what they are I have no choice. I just pray im not too late.
