I'm curious. After taking Actos (for diabetes 2), has anyone developed a sore throat/upper respiratory infection? Eight weeks after I was switched from glucophage to Actos, I developed a sore throat, never of the razor blade category, but scratchy with occasional localization. One week later I was put on Z-Pak (5-day course). Sore throat disappeared and energy returned. But within 2 weeks, sore throat, etc. returned, and one week later, was Rx'd another Z-Pak course. Within 10 days, all same symptoms returned.
Strep ruled out. No fever, in fact, seldom register above 98.2.
So I read the Actos literature. And there it is: "A side effect that may occur while taking this medicine is sore throat." My primary said to continue taking Actos, let him know if my temp more than 101, and that whatever is "not serious," and further that he's never heard of anyone getting a sore throat from taking Actos.
I have switched back to Glucophage.

I have been taking actos for several years. Recently, I have started having serious edema in my legs, feet, hands and sometimes have experience respiratory problems. There are days when I am barely able to walk because my legs and feet are so swollen and heavy. I have had ultrasound testing on my legs to rule out DVT. I am currently taking two different diuretics and they are having no effect on the edema. Some nights I have to take codeine to be able to sleep because of the coughing and congestion in my lungs. My doctor has agreed to let me decrease the actos dosage from 45 to 22.5 per day but this does not seem to help. He acts as though the edema is not a major problem, but I have been hospitalized previously with MI and have four stents. On the days that the swelling is severe I am scarcely able to walk, stand or sit. When I sit in a chair both legs go to sleep, become cold and ache severely. The doctor does not agree that I am experiencing CHF but I can think of no other reason that I have the fluid and congestion in my chest. The situation is becoming so debilitating that at this point, I really have lost my zeal for life. If I am going to have to spend most of my time in bed with my legs elevated, what kind of life is that.
Has anyone else experience this problem and what is the best way to find alternate treatments or someone who would specialize in this type of problem?
