My husband and Sweetheart and the light of my life passed away November 23, 2004, two days before Thanksgiving.
He was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma in June 2004 and developed atrial flutter at the end of September. While in the hospital at the end of October he was given Amiodarone in an IV for this and sent home with a prescription. He went back into the hospital on Nov 15th because he could no longer walk. Neuropathy was affecting his legs. During the time he was in the hospital the neuropathy traveled up into his arms and then he could no longer swallow or speak. His death certificate says he died from diffuse polyneuropathy. The Multiple Myeloma was not the cause of the neuropathy. While we were in the hospital the doctors said they thought it was from the Amiodarone. The day he went in the hospital they stopped giving it to him. He did have Multiple Myeloma... but this is not what he died from. What can I do??? I don't want ANYONE else dying like this! I would still have my Sweetheart here... I miss him so much. He was only 51. We have 10 kids and 7 grandkids... They are without their dad and grandpa.
I lost my mother in Sept 2004 to amiodarone induced lung toxicity. She was fine one day, and the next day she was having great difficulty breathing. She ended up in the ICU on a ventilator and she left us approx 2 weeks later. It was terrible to see her suffer like that. My mom was on amiodarone for a-fib for approx 2 years. I truly believe she did not know of the risks, and she certainly did not know she was dying. We still cannot believe she is not here. It is so hard to accept. She left 6 children and 7 grandchildren. She was so happy and so healthy except for her a-fib that she had for many years. We are so surprised to see how many people have been effected by this terrible drug.
The holidays are going to be very difficult, but with our families, we can get through it - i hope.

aroll, I am s o sorry to hear about your mom. Have you looked into this drug?? I have only scratched the surface.. I'm sure there is more info out there. I haven't heard of anyone getting diffuse polyneuropathy from this. I've only heard of the lung toxicity and the optic neuropathy. Have you heard of of anything like what my husband went through that was caused by Amiodarone?
I wish you and your family all the best. My husbands Memorial Service is this Saturday. This gets harder as time goes on, as I'm sure you know.
Julie
I keep waiting for it to get easier, but it doesn't happen.
I have done a lot of research on amiodarone, and it seems as though it can affect so many areas of our body and can do alot of damage. I have not come across diffuse polyneuropathy, however, I do know that for one condition or illness, there are 5 or 6 names. And I also know, from our own experience, that some doctors are not willing to admit that amiodarone is the cause for what people like your husband and my mom died of, or at least played a part in what they died of. Did you and your husband know of the risks associated wiht the drug?
Good luck on Saturday, it will be very difficult, as I am sure you know, but with friends and family, you will get through it.

We didn't know anything about the drug. He was in the hospital with atrial fribulation. He'd had 3 cardioversions done to get out of the fribulation, but his heart always went back into it. The nurse just came in with an IV for him (with the amiodarone in it) and said that should help him. He was in the hospital for approx 2 more day and was sent home with a prescription and orders to go back tot he cardioogist in a few weeks. He never got to go to that appointment because 3 weeks after he got the drug he passed aaway. Christmas is day after tomorrow... I know that this Christmas won't be easy for you (I miss my husband so very much), but I wish you all my best. Julie
My husband was on Amiadorone for almost 7 years. He loses his balance easily & falls easily. I read that's a side effect. His hands were blackish on top & bruised exceedingly easy & the skin tore off at the slightest bump on them. (Side effect.) He now has breathing difficulties & cirrhosis of the liver. They took him off the amiodarone when he went to the emergency room Mon. after Thankisgiving when a cat scan show the liver cirrhosis. He was on it for heart arrhythmias so we don't know what will happen now. He has a pacemaker also.

Hello Ezzie,
My father has been on Amiadorone for 8 years. He has the exact same problems as your husband. He also has a pacemaker. He is 73 years old. In December he fainted fell and broke 2 ribs. (He has fallen many times) The attending ( whom is new ) after many tests tells us that he has been on a double dose of this drug for way to long. He took him off immediately. He told us that it would take 12-17 Months before the drug was out of his sytem.. I almost lost it! My father sleeps 80% of the day!!. Prior to this fall He had many many follow up visits for being to tierd , out of breath, dizzy etc... and it took this for someone to wake up.
How is your husband today? My prayers are with you.

My husband is being released from the hospital tommorrow, cirrhosis of the liver, floaters in his eyes. They have taken him off the medication as well. He has been off of it for two months, Cleveland Clinic had said it would only take two months to clear. We live in Tn. they are now telling us two more months. He is in a great deal of pain , has very low blood pressure and is having trouble with speech and processing information. His balance has been affected too.He has a pacemaker difibular. His heart they tell me has miraclearsly improved after excersise and weight loss Why they did not suggest this before putting him on this drug I do not understand

He is back in the hospital again. Unable to move his bowels for three days. He has been given everything including the meds they give you to wash out your colon for exam. Last night hey gave him a fleet enima no results. He returned to the hospital after sever vomiting. All of this is due to the Amiodarone he has been on for many years. They never said this drug could lead to cirrhosis. He also has had balance problems. Has anyone found an aswer to this problem or are we looking at a liver transplant?

We are now headed to Clevland Clinic to meet with the transplant team he does have cirrhosis although his blood reports still say slightly elevated liver. He had a biopsy done at Cleveland it proved the Cirhosis. Had we known this drug was so dangerous he could have had an radio frequency ablatoin at the clinic and would have never had to take amiodarone. After the tansplant he will have to take anti rejection drugs for the rest of his life. I think the company that makes Amiodarone should pay for them. Does anyone know the name of the company?
