Oxyconton has devistated our family

My wife had a vaginal hysterectomy about 5 years ago, during surgery a nerve was severed and she will be chronic pain the rest of her life. She was given oxycontin, vicadin for pain, she had never taken drugs in her life, she was detoxed from the opiates in Dec. 2001 and she is still having problems mentally and physically from the opiate addiction. The doctors here in Jacksonville (pain management) dispensed this
like candy, It has ruined our family.

Re: Oxyconton has devistated our family

I KNOW EXACTLY WHAT EVERYONE IS TALKIN ABOUT I RECIEVED OXY'S ABOUT 2 YRS AGO FOR BACK PAIN AND BECAME ADDICTED WITHIN A FEW MONTHS. I SHOULD HAVE DIED I WAS SO ADDICTED. I LOST MY MARRIAGE, MY JOB, MY CHILDREN AND HAD MY CAR REPO'ED ALL BECAUSE I HAD TO BE HOSPITALIZED 4 TIMES IN ONE YEAR FOR THIS ADDICTION. IT'S THE WORST THING I HAVE EVER BEEN THROUGH IN MY LIFE. I AM NOW OFF OF THEM, BUT IT HAS BEEN A VERY LONG PAINFUL ROAD. I HAD NO IDEA WHAT I WAS GETTING MYSELF INTO WITH THESE THINGS. IT'S BEEN 1 YR SINCE I QUIT AND I STILL THINK ABOUT THEM EVERY DAY AND DREAM ABOUT THEM AT NIGHT. I DON'T KNOW IF THIS WILL EVER GO AWAY. SINCERELY, dbuzz143@AOL.COM IF ANYONE WANTS TO TALK TO ME YOU CAN EMAIL ME ABOUT THIS . THANKS

Re: Oxyconton has devistated our family

I know how alot of you feel. My husband got started back in 96 on Oxycontin. at first we thought it was a great medicine. But it wasn't long before it ruined our whole families lives. He started at 10's and went all the way to taking 10 to 15 pills 80 mg ones at one time. Sounds like alot but get this he was chewing them up. Then one day I had a migraine and he told me I would feel better if I took one of his pills. Yeah it took the headache away. But then I became an addict right along with him. Because I began to take it when I would get a slight headache instead of aspirin or something else. We have three boys and that is what made me stop to realize one day we were not only hurt us we were hurting them even more. But my husband was so far gone that he couldn't see it that way. We would go to the doctor and tell them that he needed help getting off of them. But the pain doc would just write another script. He even knew my husband was seeing several other doctors to get the oxycontin. We wanted a doctor to understand he couldn't do it alone. But then the drinking started with my husband he lost his job because he was always taking off to go see a doctor to get his Oxycontin. I tried to help him get off them. He would give me the pills after he would get a script filled and say no matter what don't give me but so many a day. Well that didn't work because he would do anything for them..and I just told him he couldn't fight the battle till he was ready to quit. He was always so paranoid and talk about moody. PMS had nothing on what he was. I eventually left him it was tough. I had been married to him from the age of 17. He was everything to me. He begged me to come home and help him find a rehab. I found several rehabs but he wouldn't go. He was found passed out on the highway and the took him to the hospital and kept him a week. Which he told them he wanted to go to rehab. They told him they wouldn't take him. But before he left there two doctors of the same hospital wrote him scripts for Oxycontin and xanax. I mean what is it with doctors they looked at his charts and knew the other doctor had prescribed Oxy. Well after that he ended up in jail because he ran out of Oxy and decided he could write his own script (He had done it before.) Well he was wasted when he wrote it and took it to the pharmacy. He made one huge mistake he wrote it for 800mg. In turn the pharmacy called police. He ended up with 2 felony accounts against him. I in turn divorced him. And I think that is when he realized how much he had lost. He was out on bond and fled the state from authorities. He was very sick and I seen him before he left I could tell his liver was being affected. His eyes and skin were yellow. He was sick. Well when a friend called and told me a few days that he was in the hospital with liver failure I hoped this would be rock bottom for my best friend. Not long after that he was picked up by bounty hunters. He ended up going through withdrawals in jail. I know he had to be going through a tremendous hell at that time. But to ended this story on a great note. He got off of the the little pill with the big addiction OXYCONTIN. And we have remarried and I have the man I married back. He does have to take medications for his back pain. But he his only on Ultram. Non addictive meds only in our home. We know how they can tear a family apart. And to think just one little pill started all of this hell.If anyone knows anything about a lawsuit against Purdue please let us know at bb22170@yahoo.com

Re: Oxyconton has devistated our family

I was on Oxy for 2 years.  It stopped working for the pain so my Doc gave me an rx for Duragesic Patches.  I expected withdrawl from the Oxy, but it didn't happen.  After a month I stopped using the Duragesic patch (I had pain with it after a while too).  I'm not taking anything right now and suffered no side effects from getting off the Oxy.  For those of you addicted, please think about the Duragesic Patches.  They are expensive but may be a way out for you.

It was encouraging to see another poster having the same experience as me, the patches work!

Re: Oxyconton has devistated our family

mastrix D- too bad your doc didnt give you neurontin instead- it helps enhance the effects of oxycotin and gives better pain relief.  For those who take Vicodin- if you are able to take tylenol half way thru the dosing period- it also enhance the pain relief effects.

If I'm the angel of mercy, then why is everyone giving me hell?!

Re: Oxyconton has devistated our family

Actually, I've been on Neurontin since 1998.  It helps most with my short term memory issues.  When I first started taking it, it did help with the pain.  Even though I'm on a high dosage (I take three eight hundred ml tabs at bedtime), it no longer works for pain.

Re: Oxyconton has devistated our family

I just joined today. Im a 38 yr. old man hooked on oxycontin. My story is very similiar to all I have read. I had back surgery 3 years ago. after a year of trying everything else I was put on oxy, 2, 10 mg a day. Now I take 3-40 mg. a day, and then some and nuerontin. I owned two business's at the time of my surgery. I am in bankruptcy now, jobless and depressed beyond belief. My family has all but abandoned me and my wife of 17 years will soon follow. After I do my pill count in the morning and chew one or two, all I can think of is ending all this bull. I have had my pistol to my head countless times but could never pull the trigger. I dont want to hurt my family but why dont they believe me? They feel I could get off this stuff if I wanted. I tried. I got so sick my wife hid my gun or that would have been it for me. I use to be a strong person. Im now so weak mentally I just let them think what they want. I dont have any fight left. I now do stuff I would never have thought of before and I know its the medicine. I lie about everything and I hate liars. I have tried talking to people about it but they soon get bored and change the subject. I even wrote the Dr. Phil show and said I would go on his show, live, and stop taking oxy for his audience. I want the country to see what we go through. Mabey when the makers of this watch my legs shake uncontrollably or see me sweating and shaking and bent over from the horrible stomach pains, mabey they will reconsider. Im not asking them to ban it. Just make it so nobody esle can get addcited. I read they can do this but it cost alot and wont even be ready for testing for 3-5 years. I will no doubt be long gone by then, I know it. I have asked my doc to try and help me and what he did was cut my script down, which was fine. But the pain, not the withdrawl, came back in full force. I took a couple extra to help with the pain and of course ran out early. But when I called and told him this, he said I was abusing it and would not fill it early. I went almost 3 days with nothing but a couple lortab 7.5's which we all know is like candy compared. The worst part of that was I actually went in my in-laws house when they werent home for the lortabs because I knew they had some. I have never stolen or lied until now. I was no saint before but I wasnt a thief and a liar either, now I am both. I wont keep going on about me, I realize its the same thing you all are use to reading but if anyone knows a way I can help get the word out please contact me. I will do anything to help the next guy/girl not got hooked on this. Im hopeless but there are alot of people out there who arent yet but soon will be and I want to help. Thanks for listening all.

Re: Oxyconton has devistated our family

I just read all of the posts in this forum and was wondering how all of you are doing?  I lost my son to an OC overdose a few months ago and I am devastated.  One thing that I didn't see mentioned in the posts is that I heard one needs to be on Methadone to kick Oxy.  I had read that before my son died and I have such guilt that I didn't force him back into rehab.  But, of course, he lied and said he was fine.  I miss him very much.

I wish I could help all of you.

Re: Oxyconton has devistated our family

Hello, I have sat and read as many of these postings that I could and finally feel confident that I could write one of my own. 27 months ago  I was diagnosed with Spinal Meningitis and given Oxycontin for the pain. I do not remember the original dosage but I am currently up to 80mg 3 times daily with a oxycodone chaser as needed. Let me tell you its needed. I go through the bottle of 180 in 3 just weeks. My doctor refuses to look into anything else and I have tried to get off these on my own and I can't. My family thinks I am acting like a baby and insist that I could do it if I wanted to. If it were not for the support of my husband I would be dead by now. Although he doesn't understand these effects he is there for me. I find myself so angry all the time. I hardly get out of bed I don't think that out of all the postings I do not hav those symptoms. I just need some kind of jump start. Some idea of how I can do this. I havee to do it on my own because of my insurance company are iddiots. If anyone has any advise PLEASE forward it on to me. I will try anything to feel just a bit better. To all who have lost loved ones because of this, I'm sorry, and will think and pray for all of you. For the others who are fighting this battle with me. Hang in there somehow someway we can work through this.

Re: Oxyconton has devistated our family

I have been off oxy for only 2 weeks!!! I was taking anywhere from 140 mg. to 220 mg's a day.  I wont lie, I feel like crap. I have a 14 year old and a 13 year old and a wonderful husband.  I have back pain and would go thru my medicine to quickly. I have a GREAT relationship with my doc. I walked in his office, and gave him my almost EMPTY bottle when it should of been almost FULL. I told him i wanted off. I go see him today and will ask about the patches.  I don't ever feel good anymore without my oxy.

Re: Oxyconton has devistated our family

I've been reading these  posts, and it's frightening.  I was just recently started on Oxycontin time-release pills ... I hate the way it makes me feel.

Does anyone know if the addiction is the same with the time-release as regular dosing?  My doc says if I take the time-release every 8-12 hours I won't become addicted, but I don't like to take it twice a day.  It makes me feel so tired and my brain is mush.  So I try to deal with the pain and just take it sporadically ... usually once a day; sometimes twice a day.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.  Thank you.

Re: Oxyconton has devistated our family

Hi everyone! My name is Skooze & I'm very active on the neurontin forum on this website. I have RSD in the upper extremity and was prescribed neurontin and MScotin. I take ms 30 mg. 3x daily with 4 percocets for breakthrough. MScotin is a much better alternative to the oxycotin, & the side effects aren't as bad. BUT ONE SHOULD NEVER CRUSH,  CHEW, OR SNORT either of these drugs. That's what causes the addiction! yikes  The reason I visit this forum too, is because Purdue pharmacy will give oxy free & not mscotin free!! So what does that tell you!!! Neurontin is also free. It just angers me that these drug companies will give the bad drugs away for free, but not the good ones. It's our bodies & our minds, & you have the power to try something that works, & when you become a slave to the drug, use your meds before your next refill, that is a definite warning sign that something is wrong! I hope this helps everyone. I know from reading these posts that I will stick to the MSCotin & pay for it financially not deterioate my health. Nothing is free in life--there is always a price to pay! wink Aloha Skooze

Re: Oxyconton has devistated our family

My son is 17 and is addicted to oxycontin, and has been using since he was 16. He never had a prescription, he bought it off the street, and it is the drug of choice for the kids here. They are paying 50 to 80 dollars a pill. These kids snort it, chew it, smoke it, and melt it and use it in a syringe. My son has always been a happy, loving, caring kid, he started stealing from everyone in his family, and he became a child I did not know. About one month ago my son and a friend decided to rob a pharmacy for oxycontin, they did not get any meds, but later were apprehended. My son is now facing a felony charge for attempted armed robbery, and a felony for aggrevated assault. They are being charged as adults, my son was so high on this crap that I dont even think he knew what he did, until days later when he started to sober up. Before he committed this crime, his eyes were yellow, and his skin was not clear, and he just simply looked like crap. He has been sober now for about 3 weeks, and he looks awesome, he is in the detention center and hopefully we will be able to bring him home on tuesday. He has a long road ahead of him, and I know its gonna be hard, we have him scheduled with a therapist, and he will go to NA meetings. We have always been a very close loving family, and when you think this cant happen to you, it can, and its so scary we at this point do not know whats gonna happen with him legally, and I can tell you that if it had not been for this drug, my son would not be in this position. I want to do anything I can to get this drug off the market, there are other pain meds that can be used that are less addicting.

Re: Oxyconton has devistated our family

My husband went on this "miracle" drug back in 95-96 after 13 operations to his left ankle.  We were amazed at how it handled his chronic pain. He did well on the medication for quite a while.  Then one day he gave my "best friend" of 15 years one of his pills.  She apparently had a needle problem since back in her teens and my family's nightmare began.  For the last 4 years I've caught him sneaking to give her his oxycontin pills daily.  I've called his doctor, called the police, no one will stop them and he won't stop giving them to her.  Says he feels sorry for her because she is so addicted to them and can't stop.  Needless to say I'm now divorcing my partner of 27 years due to the drug and the fact that it has turned his brain to mush.  He doesn't think rationally and nothing that I or his family do or say will stop him from what he chooses to do.  He now lives alone counting his pills and waiting on his drug buddy to come by and see him.  He has no one else in his life and it's so sad and pathetic.  At one time he was a good husband and father  This is now his life in between visits to his doctor.  He gave up his wife and 2 children for it.  They don't have a sexual affair, she has hepatitus.  He swears he loves me and just "wants me to understand".  I do understand, they both are sick and need help.  Unforunately, I can't help them ... I have 2 children to continue to raise and no time for any more oxycontin drama in my life.  This medication ruines innocent lives too.

Re: Oxyconton has devistated our family

I also have been affected by the drug oxycontin and the doctor prescribing it.  I went to him because I had lower back pain.  I started on 20 mg and in 6 months he had me up to 280mg with 8 Norco in between.  I became a wreck and unrecognizable.  Then when I realized that I was not just "sicker than I'd ever been", but addicted, I asked to get off of the drug and he immedicately dismissed me.  I went through the most horrible detox cold turkey and almost died.  I was physically sick for 2 years.  But mostly emotionally drained.  I am completely distrustful of doctors, and rarely go to them for anything.

I would really like to hear from any of you who have had problems with this drug.  I'm trying to put together a paper to submit to the AMA, Americn Medical Assoc., concerning the drug and why it is still prescribed to people like me.  And probably many of you.

You can reach me at annieilene@gmail.com
