I have toenail fungus problems and it's embarassing for me. I can afford to take lamisil but I hear there are possibilities of problems with kidney or sight etc...so it sounds like a pretty harsh drug. I was just wondering if anyone has used it succesfully without any of the side effects? Anyone used and had problems?

Lamisil can cause liver and/or kidney problems as well as gastrointestinal problems among other things. I would imagine some people have taken it without experiencing such side effects, but there is no way to know if YOU would be one of those people!

I've had this problem for years and it's getting to the point where I just want to get rid of it. Even if there is a SMALL risk. I feel like I don't know enough about oral Lamisil to make an educated desicion. My doctor told me there is an 85%+ cure rate but he also mentioned the side effects and sounded as if it might be a problem I should just live with. For personal reason (back in the dating scene, tired of not wearing sandals in the summer, etc...) I don't want to just live with it. Does anyone know where I can find some hard data on the odds of side effects and such? All I can seem to find on the net is the downside of lamisil.

I have recently tried Lamisil for one month and have since discontinued using it. I just found out today that I have very high liver enzyme counts and it appears that it was caused by the tablets. I had been off of the tablets for four weeks before this test result. I do not recommend it, it is not worth the risk.

This is just one data point.
I have it on one nail. My podiatrist says he advocates cutting out the nail and the root. My podiatrist cited success rates of 10% or 20% for Lamisil. (I do not recall the number, but it was quite low).
I went to a dermatologist. He said Lamisil is 80% effective (or perhaps 80% of Lamisil patients don't come back one way or the other). I am trying to collect real data before deciding to use Lamisil.
He said he would test for liver function before prescribing Lamisil. I must cease drinking for 12 weeks, though!
Avoiding medications is usually a good idea, but I would take it under particular circumstances.
My nail is distorted, and I have a bad feeling I will just get toenail fungus again in a few years. I never wear sandals, I need arch support in shoes. At this moment, I am thinking just get it cut out. It will grow a callous.
Maybe I could get a jeweled body piercing to decorate that little piggy.

For the past 15 years I have suffered with toenail fungus on all 5 toes of my right foot. However, I have never had pain or discomfort and it has not spread to my left foot. I have read stories about the side effects of Lamisil which make me very afraid to take it. My own doctor told me he was confident I would not have any problems taking it. I wish I felt as confident as he does.
I am healthy with no liver problems. At this point, I don't feel confident enough to start taking Lamisil althought I have the medication and my insurance is paying for it. Would surgically removing my toenails (one at a time) effect a cure? I would consider this instead of Lamisil. As with all medications, there are risks but the thought of taking this for 90 days is very unsettling to me.
Any comments would be appreciated.

I only have one fungus-infected nail. The nail is misshapen, as is prone to happen with a little toenail that gets "deformed" while wearing a shoe. Since it is deformed, I expect that even if I used Lamisil and it worked, I would get another fungus infection eventually. Then it would be all for nought. This makes nail removal a more compelling choice.
I also am concerned about the liver effects of Lamisil. I have no known liver problems, but I have been consuming 1 drink of alcohol per day for 15 years.
Five nails removed, that's a tough proposition. You could keep putting off the problem until better data on Lamisil is determined, or another drug is created. Keep your other foot fastidiously clean and dry. Clean under the nails with a wood stick (not metal, which will scratch). Nail fungus is the same as any number of athletes' foot fungi. It likes moist places.
Some people paint their nails because of fungus. I even know a man who paints his toenails! Best wishes.

I have had fungus for like 2 yrs on all toe nails, its like the nail is a yellow color and I have white splotchy spots. I went to a doc and she did suggest lamisil, she said it is highly effective, especially for me, she said mine wasn't a horrible case, she said for people with a worse case, like older people with thicker nails it might take longer to work or not work as well. But I've taken it for two months and its seemed to work pretty well. It seemed to clear them up pretty good, only they still look like the old nail, like it doesn't seem like a new one has grown in. Like my nails have like rivets in them, they aren't smooth. So I don't know what to do about that. But I do know that I didn't have any side effects from the meds. The doc did run a blood test to make sure I could take it. didn't bother me.
