Astra Zeneca’s popular schizophrenia drug Seroquel has been linked with a high incidence of diabetes, hyperglycemia and other blood sugar disorders. Seroquel is in the class of drugs called atypical antipsychotics, which are a newer class of antipsychotics touted as having a lower incidence of blood sugar disorders than the older medications such as Haldol and Thorazine. Seroquel was approved by the FDA in 1997.

Data from a study that was reported at a conference of the International Society for Pharmacoepidemiology in Philadelphia August 23 and 24, 2003 showed that patients on Seroquel had 3.34 times as many cases of diabetes as those on older antipsychotic drugs. The study of 19,878 U.S. military veterans between October 1998 and October 2001 indicated that Seroquel and other members of the new class of anti-psychotic drugs posed a higher risk of diabetes. The effect was most pronounced with Seroquel.

Re: Seroquel in Children

My stepson is a few months away from his 7th birthday and he has been taking seroquelXR extended release tablets for a few months now and he is totally a different person and not in a better way he has been taking the professional sample pack that is 150mg. His mom got him diagnosed with bipolar and has been taking him to a doctor that has very poor reviews and a very poor establishment.  I am worried about giving it to him when we have him and at the same time worried about not giving it to him. Cause I dont know what kind of withdrawl he would have for not taking it or what the side effects could be. I have done a good amount of research and on of the things I have found is that the seroquel XR IS NOT FDA APPROVED FOR ANYONE UNDER THE AGE OF 18.  And that the doctors office pays the clients for taking the sample and having them take the medicine.  The risks of the medicine he is on does not outway the benifits.  Its is abuse and neglect to put anyone under the age of 18 on seroquelxr.   I know for a fact that he is adhd there is no doubt about that but the fact that his mother took him to a doctor with a poor reputationa and reviews that say that he passes out meds like its candy is revolting to me and it is ridiculous.  Me and my husband want to take full custody of him.  And the fact that he is having constant nightmares since the meds started is beyond upsetting.  I want to know what I can do I have friends in the local law enforcement agencys and there also seeing what they can do.  He is not even taking an actual prescription from the pharmacy its just a weird sample pack that is given to him.
