My husband has been taking Enbrel shots for a few months now, for Rhuematoid Arthritis... he has been getting sick to his stomach and frequent headaches recently, and wondering if anyone else has had the same problem with Enbrel, or if it is being cause by something else.. thanks!
Offline
I would call the doctor and let him know how he's feeling...but you might want to just use one shot a week and see if his symptoms clear up. I've talked to some people who do very well on just one shot rather than the two. We're all so different.

Thank you, I will definetly have him talk to the doc about using only one a week, rather than two... could be a combination of things- was why I was wondering if anyone else had the same symptoms. Thanks again!

I haven't been sick to my stomach but I too have experienced frequent headaches......I usually take tylenol to make them go away but it doesn't always work......I don't get the headaches as much anymore, my rheumatoligist has informed me to keep an eye on the headaches and if they persist to let him know

Well we figured out what the problem was.. the hard way! We saw the doc on friday, and they said he had a stomach flu. But the headaches kept getting worse, so on monday I took my husband to the hospital, he just got out today.. The Enbrel knock down his immune system so low, that he caught a virus, which settled in his spine.. Spinal Menengitis! He became really dehydrated so they admitted him and kept him in the hospital for 4 days.. he got to come home today and is doing much better now! Thank GOD!!! ![]()

I'm so glad your husband is doing better.......Pretty scary......Is he still going to continue with enbrel. My headaches do not come as often now.
I wish you both good luck.

Thank you! I'm not sure yet about the Enbrel.. its like a catch 22.. if he takes the Enbrel, too many chances of being ill.. if not his joints hurt too bad to function! For a while my husband thought Enbrel was a God send, now he doesnt ever want to take it again! but we do plan to talk to the doc about it- and see what she thinks

Please keep me updated on what your husband decides to do.......It's been almost 5 months now since I've been on enbrel and without it I couldn't do anything, (not even pick up a cup of coffee) After 3 weeks my life was starting to be normal again.....I was out of work for 9 months and now I'm back to work.......I couldn't go fishing with my husband and now I'm doing that again. I wish you both good luck. I heard that after you stop taking enbrel that the arthritis symptoms reappear after about a month. I can't imagine going through those horrible symptoms and feelings of being useless again. So far I'm feeling pretty lucky that enbrel has helped me so much. I know that it's not for everyone, and I hope it continues to help me. After all at 41 years old I have too much life left to feel crappy all the time. Arthritis robbed me of almost 2 years of my life, and now I have my life back. I thank god for all that I can do again. Some day my children will have children and I want to be able to hold them. Take care and I hope everything works out well for you both.

Thank you for letting me know that, and yes I will let you know what we find out. My husband is only 32 and has had RA symptoms for about five years... we just thought he had bad knees., carpal tunnel, etc.. I know what you mean about not wanted to have the symptoms come back!

Well we saw the RA doc today, she decided that my husband should start treaments again. We are a little concerned, but the alternative is not being able to walk, lift anything, and losing his grip. She thinks the Spinal Menengitis may have been a "fluke" thing that happend, because he was feeling so well (from the Enbrel) that he ran himself down- by doing more than he was use to. He was like: "yay! I feel good, I can do anything!" so combined with the low immune system, and running himself ragged, he was more susceptable to getting a virus.... anyhow, here we go again! will keep in touch! wish us luck!

good luck........I'll say a prayer for you both..........
also wanted to let you know that I hardly ever get headaches anymore. I think it's been about 3 weeks since I've had one.......
think positive, there are better days ahead. Most of my side effects have subsided or been reduced to a minimum. Take Care.........Dolores

Has anyone had problems with edema while on Enbrel? I had to stop taking it for about 8 weeks because our new insurance refused to pay for it. Finally they agreed to pay due to medical need. After my first two shots, when starting it again, I started to swell all over and even taking an extra water pill each day doesn't help.
Also, my blood pressure went sky high and I was admitted to a hospital for a couple days to rule out a cardiac problem. They couln't find anything wrong and said it was a secondary hypertension and now I am wondering if Enbrel is the culprit in both of these reactions since they happened at about the same time.
We are in the south west for the winter and I haven't been able to get my doctor to give me any advise. Instead he wants to wait until he sees me.

Hello,
I am writing to inquire if anyone has any information on a possible link between Enbrel and colon cancer. My 19 year old neice has been taking Enbrel once a week for about a year and has been recently been diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer with metastaces to the ovaries and bladder. Any information or links would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance!

HI. This is the first I hear about something so terrible that might be linked with enbrel. So sorry about your nieces condition.
Unfortunately for us, the people on enbrel, don't really know what the risks are from taking it.
I have been on Enbrel for about a year and I take it twice a week
My rheumatolagist specifically told me their were no findings yet for long term effects of being on Enbrel. So far, so good for me.
I wish you both the best. Would like to know if you find a link so please keep me posted.
Sincerely, Dolores

You may have seen my reply above. I also am having difficulting controlling my b/p. My internist blames the meds and my rheumy thinks it has nothing to do with it! today I stopped my Enbrel to see what happens!
I know I am playing with fire!
Hope you are feeling better and things are under control.

My husband was operated on the other day as his wound from his recent rotator cuff surgery opened up and was infected down to his joint. The culture hasn't come back yet, but the physician blames enbrel for his low immune system. His hands are swollen and neurologist thinks he has cts due to the enbrel side effects. We've gotten 3 opinions and it's all boiling down to Enbrel side effects. Since it's a new drug, we don't even know if his side effects will go away. Please pray for my husband that this infection will go away and stay away with the resistant antiobiotics after the culture comes back. He's on a potent antibiotic via iv; can't drive for 6 mos; and will need an iv w/antibiotics with a visiting nurse for a while. Nevermind the fact that he'll need his rotator cutt surgery redone down the road. Next step after we get him well, is to sue the mfr of enbrel. I've read and spoken to attys and one atty has 40 lawsuits against Enbrel.....it's a very dangerous drug and not all side effects are being told to physicians for patients to know about.

Enbrel is linked to certain cancers. Your niece's doctor should have dicussed the risks with her. My husband is on Enbrel, and his doctor went over every possible risk and side effect with him first, Including the increased risk of cancer. Did her doctor give her the kit with the video and answer book? Please have her look into this.

My RA Doctor prescribed Enbril for me, I've had Ankylosing Spondylitis. NONE of the side effects were mentioned to me, and the Curascript Pharmacy who was to deliver the medicine did not mentioned the side effects. FDA issued the strongest warning available to them in a Dear Doctor letter to warn of these side effects, especially if you currently have an infection or are prone to infections. I had a sinus infection at that time & am prone to having sinus infections. I started doing research and also called the makers of Enbrel. They said NO WAY should I start Enbril at this time. This is a good site to consider looking at if you are thinking of starting Enbril. The side effects scared me to death, and I found out Enbril contains Mouse protein??? http://remedyfind.com/rm-676-Enbrel.asp
