Astra Zeneca’s popular schizophrenia drug Seroquel has been linked with a high incidence of diabetes, hyperglycemia and other blood sugar disorders. Seroquel is in the class of drugs called atypical antipsychotics, which are a newer class of antipsychotics touted as having a lower incidence of blood sugar disorders than the older medications such as Haldol and Thorazine. Seroquel was approved by the FDA in 1997.

Data from a study that was reported at a conference of the International Society for Pharmacoepidemiology in Philadelphia August 23 and 24, 2003 showed that patients on Seroquel had 3.34 times as many cases of diabetes as those on older antipsychotic drugs. The study of 19,878 U.S. military veterans between October 1998 and October 2001 indicated that Seroquel and other members of the new class of anti-psychotic drugs posed a higher risk of diabetes. The effect was most pronounced with Seroquel.

seroquel

I Have been on seroquel for over a year and am very concerned about the possibilities of what it can do.  I was always concerned with the extra eye exams that are necessary due to the drug, but to worry about becoming diabetic when it runs so strongly in my family just doesn't seem worth it.  My shrink suggested I might try going off of it last week, but didn't give a specific reason...

Re: seroquel

Seroquel has been PROVEN to dramatically increase your risk of diabetes.  Since you are already at risk given your family history, this drug is probably not for you.

You should talk to your doctor about this.

Good luck!

Re: seroquel

[b] lol Hi, I am new to this board.   I have just gotten a new foster daughter, she is seven.  She is on a lot of drugs, by the way I am a nurse, and already know a lot about these drugs.  I am against all these drugs for children, even if they have had a past of abuse.  There are other ways to deal with their acting out and problems.  I feel a lot of listening, understanding and nurturing will finally solve these problems.   And the schools should train their teachers to help these children, and not just complain and ask for them to be put on more drugs.

She is on seroquel, ritalin, periacton and depkote.  My family doctor has also suggested that she be taken off some of these, especially the seroquel, but of course I will have to fight the system to do this.  I feel that psyhchiatrist do not have enough medical training, and do not really care about the side effects these drugs have on the children.

Your story is so sad. I really hope you push to get that poor child off those awful meds! I am sure you probablly already realize that  those drugs arent even approved for the use on  children.  Fight for her or she will never stand a chance! Good luck!!!!

Re: seroquel

I would suggest you go the Medline web site and put in key words relating to your problem.  You should be able to find abstracts to articles which can help you:
