fluid around heart

I was on Vioxx for about a month for chronic pelvic pain.  When I had a pelvic ultrasound they looked at my heart and saw fluid around it.  I had an echo that showed fluid around my heart.  Up to that point I had no symptoms of anything.  At that time, I stopped taking Vioxx.  Since then, for the last week I'm getting mild chest pains.

Does anyone think that Vioxx caused the fluid around my heart?  If so, does it make sense that I started feeling symptoms after I went off of Vioxx?

Re: fluid around heart

Hmmm, you know the same thing happened to me as well while on Vioxx. Twice in fact. Then it mysteriously disappeared both times, and no doctor has yet to explain why this occured. Now I'm suspicious.

Re: fluid around heart

I have been taking vioxx for about 3 years and recently notice increased swelling around my ankles and in my calves.  I also started to experience difficulty breathing.  I thought it was just because I was retaining fluids and my doctor prescribed me fluid pills.  He said he was concerned that I may have fluid around my heart, but my lungs were clear.  This caused me a little concern because I was told that I may have early stage kidney disease last year and Lasix (fluid pills) over an extended period of time can cause kidney failure.

I ran out of vioxx just before they removed it from the market and the swelling seemed to go away and my breathing has improved somewhat as well.  I still have a little swelling (fluid retention), but it has greatly diminished since stopping the vioxx.

Re: fluid around heart

for little over a year.  I had trouble breathing and my chest always felt like either it would exlpode or like I was nervous all the time.  I just pushed it aside as part of getting older.  But at my annual they found my heart rate was 135 sitting  220 if I walked five steps.  I had a king of hearts, ECG, stress test, and a 24hr monitor.  And all they said was it was beating like that of someone having a heart attack but don't know why.  So I'm checking my options.  I was 28yrs old when I went through all that.  Now I'm 31yrs and stuck taking this Toprol to slow my heart down.  I can't even be an hour late or I feel like my heart is going to explode.  Now science isn't exact so you can never prove what did or didn't cause the problem but considering there's no other explaination I'm leaning towards the Vioxx as the cause.

Re: fluid around heart

I agree with Melissa that there isn't really any way to prove whether or not vioxx is the culprit, but I never had any heart problems before vioxx and have been seen at the ER and kept overnight once because they thought I was having arythmia (sp?) since about a year and a half to two years after starting the vioxx.  I also had to have my knee replace earlier this year and should have gone home a day earlier than I did, but since my heart rate was so high, they were concerned about what may be causing it.  Of course, they were continuing my vioxx while I was hospitalized and they ran several tests trying to figure out why my heart rate was so fast.  I went home about 3 or 4 days after the surgery and other than t he swelling and the breathing difficulty do not seem to be having any problems.  I did not have kidney problems before taking the vioxx either, but again, who's to say what causes what?

Re: fluid around heart

to talk to someone else who had problems.  Not that I'm glad you're sick or anything.  It's just I stopped the Vioxx in 2001 because I seen one lone commercial saying Vioxx was linked to heart attacks and strokes.  Then a couple of months later when I'm being rushed into test after test like they thought I would keel over any minute.  I kept telling the cardiologist about the commercial and they looked at me like I didn't know what I was talking about.  Then after all the tests they just determined they don't know the cause.  I was starting to feel delusional.

Re: fluid around heart

Melissia.

I had the heart attack and mild stroke. Up to that time I had the exploding chest and SOB and still suffer from that.

Also now there are times my memory is shot out of the window. I can read a book or watch tv and the next day and not remember what I read or watch.

It is at the point where I gather up note and have some recall from that and at other times I may triger something off to where I can remember.

Re: fluid around heart

gday guys, I was taking vioxx on and of for about 2 years as i was told it was easier on the stomach,,about half a year ago i had was is best desribed as the closest to a heart attack with having one ,,,, it was suspected to be ,,,hear we go dont trust me spelling     PERICARTIDIS,,,,say it how i spelt it?????  it lasted for about 12 hours never thought any more of ,,till latley haveing short but sharp chest pain,,back to docs yep probably  samething ,i have to get an ultra sound on my heart to check for any scared tissue   ($289.00 thatll cause an attack on its own),,,pericartidis is an infection in the membrane surrounding the heart, its not a common illness but it happens ,,i've seen many doctors over the years who presribed VIOXX but only one sent me a letter telling me to stop taking the pills, and not the most recent of them, i took them as an anti inflamitry for a prolapsed disk in the lower back
