Neurontin, which is known generically as Gabapentin, may be linked to suicide and suicide attempts. Neurontin is prescribed for epilepsy but has been prescribed for numerous off label uses. Neurontin was approved for sale in the mid-1990s as a treatment for epileptic seizures. However, it is believed that approximately 80 percent of all Neurontin prescriptions were filled for unapproved medical conditions.

If you or a loved one was injured by Neurontin, please complete the free case inquiry form on the right side of this page.

using neurontin for lower back pain

:-?

IN AUGUST OF 2001, I WAS INJURED AT MY OFFICE.  I WAS PUT IN THE HOSPITAL AFTER SUFFERING SYMPTOMS OF SEVERE PAIN IN MY LOWER BACK AND NUMBNESS AND TINGLING DOWN THE SIDE OF MY LEFT LEG.
I SOON HAD LIMITED USE OF MY LEFT HIP, LEG AND FOOT. TESTING WAS NATURALLY EXTENSIVE SINCE THIS MY PROBLEM SHOULD HAVE STARTED TO EASE TO A CERTAIN DEGREE AND WAS NOT HAPPENING.
AFTER RECEIVING NUMEROUS CT SCANS, MRI'S AND A SPINAL TAP ALONG WITH OTHER PERTINENT TESTS, THE DOCTORS COULD NOT FIND AN ANSWER TO THE WORSENING CONDITION.  SINCE I HAD BEEN ON A MORPHINE DRIP FOR ALMOST 3 WEEKS, THE DOCTORS STOPPED THE DRIP AND CHANGED DELIVERY TO AN ORAL APPLICATION OF THE DRUG. THEY THEN PERSCRIBED FOR ME NEURONTIN ALONG WITH FLEXERALL.
I WAS SENT HOME AFTER A MONTHS WORTH OF PHYSICAL THERAPY AS A RESIDENT OF THEIR FACILITY.  THE ONLY MEDICATION THAT I HAD BEEN LEFT ON WAS NEURONTIN.
IT IS NOW MAY, 2004 AND I AM TAKING 6400 MG OF THIS DRUG.
I DON'T KNOW HOW I COULD LIVE WITHOUT IT. IT HAS ALLOWED ME TO BE 90% PAIN FREE.
I WAS SADDENDED TO HEAR THE REPORTS ABOUT NEURONTIN, SINCE, I CANNOT IMAGINE LIFE WITHOUT IT...
I AM WONDERING THAT THE ELEMENT OF DEPRESSION THAT I SUFFER SINCE MY HOSPITAL STAY IS FROM NEURONTIN OR IS IT FROM MY FEELING OF BEING A SLAVE TO MEDICATION AND THE OVERALL LIMITATIONS THAT I NOW SUFFER.[/img]

Re: using neurontin for lower back pain

I was diagnosed with acute disseminated encephalomyelits in 1992. In 1994 I went to see another neurologist because I was not getting any better after 2 years of PT and OT. Pain, severe skin sensations, muscle spasms and motor deficits were/are my problem. I was given neurontin for pain. Fist 100 mg 3 times a day along with motrin. I was still in pain and he kept increasing the dose. I am on 400 mg 3 times a day and rely on motrin, 800 mg. daily.

I just found out about the law suit and the drug this past Thursday. I feel so duped! The doctor that had first prescribed the drug is no longer my doctor because I moved to another state. Last year when I saw the neurologist I was referred to here in Kansas City was aware of the drug and he asked me what I was taking it for. Neither he, nor the two other neurologists I have seen since have told me about the law suit regarding the drug.

Now I know why the pain never goes away.

Re: using neurontin for lower back pain

I have chronic back pain. I also suffered insomnia. I used to be on the floor crying when my husband woke up in the morning because I would have been awake all night once again.  I had accually heard about Neurontin from a nurse that I knew. I asked my Dr. about letting me try it since I had tried everything else. It started helping right away. I had my first good nights sleep in years. It also helped a lot with my back pain. I hope I never have to go back to the way it was before I started taking this medication. My quality of life is so much better!!!

Re: using neurontin for lower back pain

I was put on Neurotin for Neuropathy and RSD.  Do any of you ever have thoughts of sucided when things get a little rough and you are depressed.  I know this is a little personal, but I am taking 4800 mg a day  and whenever something hurts me I think everyone would be better off without me around.  I even know how I would do it too.  But I am a Christian and know this is not right with God, but I still get really strong feelings towards it.  Please let me know if this has ever effected you in this way

Re: using neurontin for lower back pain

Dear Kath,

Let me tell you the depression is from the neurotin. It's weird that we have the same last name. I was on 1200 then up to 2000 mg per day for radial neuropathy which started at my neck and shot down my arm to my finger tips. It was so sensitive that you could not even blow air on it. Well. at first the neurotin made me paranoid, then my thought process was out of control. I had the keys to my sisters house and I knew she was at work so I went in her garage and preceded to take 30 heavy duty sleeping pills, 150 baclofen, and 200 Ultram. Now this was the day after Christmas and I was severely depressed but no-one in my family knew.
I sat in the car with the car running and was just lucky enoug that my sister got off a half hour early she had to hop the fence because she couldn't figure out why her garage door wasn't opening. When she opened the garage she began to choke. She then called 911 and they told her to get me out of the car as asap. She opened all the doors and at that time I was twice her size so she grab me by the hood of my coat and when I hit the floor I let out a loud snore. I spent 9 days in the hospital going from a newborn baby to my age at the time was 40 yrs old. I walk out of the hospital AMA they were on an holiday staff and I was tied to my bed after 5 days in intensive care.  So please try TOPOMAX it has changed my life and does the same as neurotin. Thanks Connie Ballou

Re: using neurontin for lower back pain

Hello, I was diagnosed with epilepsy over 14 yrs ago. I took the drug Dilantin until 2002.  I had an unexplained seizure and a neurologist put me on Neurontin 300mg a day. Pretty small dosage compared to everything else I have been reading.  Anyways I have been on the drug for 2 yrs now and have never felt right. I have just been diagosed with edema, and have had a low blood sugar attack recently. This medicine has caused me great anguish in my life as far as the mood swings, weight gain, the fog, cluminess and just about everthing else everyone has described. The only good thing is has done is stopped my knee joints from popping but living with this drug has been a nightmare.  I too did not know of all the controversy with this drug until last night.  My found this site.  I have been having severe complications for over a month now and have decided to to get off the drug. I am dropping my dose to 2 day starting yesterday and after one week will drop it 1 more pill, then none after that.  I will suffer the consequences of this drug and the pain just so I can let my body return to normal.  I cannot take part in the lawsuit because it was not a standalone treatment ((thank god) and i have not been suicidal, granted i became very depressed and withdrawn and dreamed of suidcide. I could never do it.  Anyways my heart goes out to all who take this medicine and I hope you find a way to get off it.  Let us show parke davis and pfizer what we think of their miracle drug!!

Re: using neurontin for lower back pain

can anyone tell me where to find out more about what long term damages neurontin can cause.

i was on it for about two years.  it was prescribed to me for back pain.  i had two surgeries while on it.  also took hydrocodone in several different forms.  had to be put on an anti-depressant, effexor.  also celebrex for back pain for a time but it caused bad side effects with my stomach.  i was also given oxy-contin but it did not help with pain levels at all.  and sleeping pills at times due to nightmares or insomnia.  my stress levels from the pain and having problems getting good care were extremely high.  i started suffering panic attacks before doctors appt.'s

after i started taking the neurontin i started to hear things.  for a while i thought i was going crazy.  the doctor said i just needed rest.  of course not sleeping for days at a time can make anyone a little nutty.

but after reading these posts i am a bit concerned.  i read about the lawsuit in the paper but it just had contact info for attorneys.

it's been a little over three years since my last surgery and i don't take anything now.  but i do still have some problems and there were things going on with me the doctors couldn't figure out.  i had several blood tests but nothing ever came back positive.  i was told i almost tested positive for a lot of stuff but not enough to count.

i am always tired, my hands swell and ache like crazy sometimes.  my legs ache.  sometimes i just go numb for no apparent reason.

i don't really have a doctor now, i'm terrified to go see one.  i had really bad care in the hospital and don't trust them.

but as i've stated before, i am a bit concerned on hearing all this stuff about neurontin.  the doctor that gave it to me had a terrible staff and she wasn't very reliable.  the receptionist even told me i had lupus once.  i don't.  she read the test wrong and she shouldn't have been the one to tell me anway.

if anyone knows where i can find detailed info on long term side effects i would be grateful.
