oxycontin and deafness.

2 1/2 years ago I too was started on a small dose, just 20 mg a day. When I got to 200 mg a day and hadn't seen my doctor in 2+ years I finally had enough. I did finally get off the meds, but I have severe hearing loss in my left ear. A large So Cal ear, nose and throat group did a study in 99 and found that in 10 out of 12 patients there was some form of deafness. I know my doctor knew of this report. I just found out about this, I'm so mad I could spit nails.

There is an experimental treatment for opiate dependency with a drug called Buprenaphrin (sp?) or something similar. Has anyone ever tried it ? There are only a few doctors in each large city that are qualified to administer it, but it's supposed to work very well. I seriously considered it.

Re: oxycontin and deafness.

I used Buprenorphine when I detoxed from oxycontin.  It is still very controlled and as you stated used only by a few physicians.  It did seem to help a bit but there was another detoxing from vicoden and he was still having a really bad time even though he was using the Buprenorphine.  I only used it while in detox but I understand that some folks are maintained with it like they do when using methadone???
