I have just started on Neurontin for nerve damage that happened during a hysterectomy in Dec. of 2003. My pain (abdominal) has at least doubled since I've started taking Neurontin - along with the "brainfog", loss of balance & coordination, edema, etc. etc. I am also suffering from intense diarrhea. I have complained to my doctor about the side effects, but both doctors I have consulted have continued to push me to put up with the side effects until my body has learned to tolerate the drug, because of Neurontin's "exciting promise for nerve pain". Now I'm learning about the fraud and lawsuits and I don't know who to believe. Do I listen to my dr's (I've always trusted them but were they misled?) and hope that Neurontin really is a miracle drug? Or do I follow my gut instincts and quit the stuff? I really do want to get rid of this pain, but is Neurontin the answer?

I don't know why i looked up information on this drug, but I'm totally shocked to see this drug being prescribed to me. I am a diabetic who has heel pain. I was thinking it could be a heel spur, but the doctor gave me Neurontin as described by the drug company for the pain, thinking it could be diabetic neuropathy. Now after reading all it's OTHER side effects. I'm afraid to take the drug. I don't want to confront my doctor and to doubt him, but with this information what am i supposed to do? He's trying to help me and I'm doubting him. Why would he want to keep me as a patient? anyone have a suggestion as to what I could do? I do feel as if the drug does relieve some of the pain, but when I'm in a "drunk" state it's no wonder I don't feel any pain. Does anyone have any suggestions? I know I can easily come off the drug without any problems. I haven't been taking it that long. But what do I do about the pain then?

I too am scared about all this! I have always been extra sensitive to drug side effects and was shocked when I read that Neurontin has so many. I have been a diabetic for almost 30 years and suffered nerve pain from a hysterectomy in December of 2003. My doctors told me very little about Neurontin, just that it had been reported to have great success with diabetic nerve pain. I went on it about 2 months ago and instantly hated the "drunken" feeling. I really wanted to go off it but my doctors (and a well-known pain clinic also) told me that my body would eventually tolerate the side effects and urged me to keep increasing the dosage "because the testing all showed such good results". I finally looked up Neurontin and was shocked to see the news of the fraud. But if I have learned one thing over the years, it is that my doctors should only be secondary to my health - I have to be the one in control. So I talked to my doctor (who knew nothing about the lack of testing and was as equally shocked as I was) and she agreed to take me off Neurontin. I have been tapering off it for the last two weeks and feel much better already. My pain has been better (one of the side effects is abdominal pain, which it was supposed to be treating) and it feels SO good to be able to think clearly again. While I was taking Neurontin, I would wake up in the night with both of my arms asleep and aching - and that has gone away since I have been lessening my dosage. I also had a low-grade fever which would make me sweat and then chill - that has also gone away, etc. etc. I have been back to the pain clinic, who also didn't know about the fraud, and we are going to experiment with other pain relief methods. So, my advice to you is - talk to your doctor! Chances are, he hasn't even heard about the lack of testing. And he should listen to your concerns. If the pain continues, see a pain clinic - they are very good and make you feel like you aren't the only one suffering and that there are really ways to make you feel better. As for me, I'm now on Vicodin (the pain clinic insists that the percentage of addiction is extremely low with true pain sufferers) and am trying exercises and other measures to control my pain. Bottom line - Get Off Neurontin and talk to your doctor about it. If he's a good doctor, he will be glad you are sharing your feelings with him. Good luck - let me know how it goes. You aren't alone!

I have RSD/CRPS due to a work injury in 1999. I needed neck surgery and/or shoulder surgery. After playing a wicked game of chess with the doctors, insurance companies and attorneys, the Dept. of Labor the neck surgery was approved for 12/02. I started showing signs of RSD before the surgery. After the surgery my Dr."s put me on Neurontin for nerve pain because I wasn't getting better. I then started getting worse. I've had my dosages increased and decreased. I'm on 600 mg. 3x a day. I'vehad diarrhea, brain fog, dizziness, bumping into walls, tripping over things, insomnia--you name it. I'm also hypoglcemic which is the opposite of diabetic. I'm trying to get off the Neurontin but my Dr's don't want me to. I've closed my work comp case and now I'm permanetly partially disabled. Partial refers to parts of the body. Now I'm on medicare and the neurontin is the most expensive drug I'm on.($200) I am not giving up my other pain meds, anxiety meds, or antidepressants. My gut instinct is saying to wean myself off along with the $$ side. I know I'm not crazy!
Aloha! I posted a comment listed as guest on 5/7/04 at 7:58 pm. I had a problem registering to the website due to brain fog--Duh a side affect from neurontin!!!! Anyone who has been prescibed this drug please write and or send me a message. There is strength in numbers and we have to ban against the drug co. to get the message across! I started a support group here, but had to give it up because I was pretty much bedridden towards the end. All the people were on Neurontin!!! I'm just now connecting the dots. It's late here now so for now I must close==and Aloha means Hello. goodbye and I love you. All which apply. Take care and please write. Skooze

After picking up my second prescription of Neurotin, I asked the pharmacist about the mixing of Effexor and Neurotin and he told me that I needed to let my Dr. know cause the chances of have a seizure increase greatly when mixing the two. The sad part is, that I told my Dr. that I was taking Effexor when he wrote out the script and he said it was alright. No effects at all!!
Who do you believe?

Hi Queen, this is the first time I 've been on my computer in 4 months. I had 354 emails alone! Anyhow I have had Dr's tell me tha t it'sok to mix meds, when we all know it's not. Usually after a 1 to 2 week trial period the side effects show up. A lot of these Dr's are getting "kickbacks" for prescribing the meds, and they don't live with the results. Listen to your body. If it doesn't feel right don't take it. I have RSD for 5+ years, and when I was on neurontin, I could not function. I had a drunkin like feel and talked & walked that way. I have been off for 1 year now, and some of the NeRotton side effects still linger. Hope this helps
