Reaction to Zyban

I would like to hear from anybody out there who has had an allergic reaction to Zyban which is similar to mine. I had such a bad reaction after being on Zyban for 15 days that I had to visit casualty two nights running  and then the next night being admitted to hospital for 3 nights. I was injected with steroids, adrenalin and anti-histamines. I then spent the next 2 weeks on sick leave. I have been off Zyban for 4 weeks now and I am still slightly itchy and have a slightly numb tongue.
The side effects that I suffered are as follows : swollen eyes, swollen mouth/lips, giant/lumpy hives all over the body, very severe itching, difficulty swallowing, difficulty breathing, numbness in the tongue, lips and mouth, headaches, and extreme lethargy.
The doctor has advised me that I may still be itchy for anything up to 3 months.
I would like to hear from other people regarding Zyban, otherwise it is good to let others know of the dangers related to Zyban.
Regards

Re: Reaction to Zyban

Hi Annette

Your posting really scares me. I took zyban for 8 days adn stopped 8 days ago. My life is hell at the moment because of the lumps, hives, skin problems. My skin is in tatters from scratching. I can hardly go out, because its too embarrassing to sit in public and scratch all the time. I've been browsing the web trying to find out how long this is likely to last, and it doesn't cheer me up to hear that your doctor is telling you it could last up to 3 months. How can they possibly now warn us of this when we take it.

Feel free to email me directly at jolly.rogers5@verizon.net. I'd love to hear from you.

Re: Reaction to Zyban

I took zyban for 16 days. On the 16th day, i noticed skin peeling off my feet, making them very itchy. A day later my hands are peeling as well. Its day 21 and i have never been so itchy all over my body. The only thing that soothes it for me is rubbing alcohol on myself. The drs didnt say anything about this, and the pamphlet didnt either. I feel for anyone who is on this drug, its not good. In my opinion, ZYBAN should be BANNED.

Re: Reaction to Zyban

I have taken Zyban 2 years ago for smoking cessation and it did work for me, but I got a bad case of the hives. The doctor told me that I had to stop taking it completely and start taking benedryl until the symptoms went away. They lasted about 2 weeks. Unfortunately, I went back to smoking.
Now I am on Zyban again, to quit smoking, and once again, Im getting itchy hives. I'll have to stop and take benedryl once more. Im hoping Im strong enough not to go back to smoking this time. I would like to add something here though. A close friend of mine did stop smoking recently cold turkey, with nothing aiding her quit and she broke out in hives also! I dont know whether it is something that is normal for withdrawl or not, but it seems that it could be and that it isnt Zyban at all?

Re: Reaction to Zyban

I took Zyban several years ago for smoking cessation, and it worked good in that regard; however, after taking it on and off a few months, under my doctor's care, I started having very frequent and somewhat violent heart palpitations that finally caused me to go to the emergency room that evening, where I was hooked up to a monitor and was diagnosed with PVCs - Premature Ventricular Contractions.  My doctor immediately took me off the Zyban and told me to limit my caffeine intake. No more PVCs after that.
