Neurontin, which is known generically as Gabapentin, may be linked to suicide and suicide attempts. Neurontin is prescribed for epilepsy but has been prescribed for numerous off label uses. Neurontin was approved for sale in the mid-1990s as a treatment for epileptic seizures. However, it is believed that approximately 80 percent of all Neurontin prescriptions were filled for unapproved medical conditions.

If you or a loved one was injured by Neurontin, please complete the free case inquiry form on the right side of this page.

Advice needed please.

My 13 year old son has Neurofibromatosis.
He recently had an MRI of his spine because of lower back pain.
It came back that he has several tumors on the nerves in his back.
His Neurologist put him on 100mg of Neurontin and said he can take up to 4 pills as needed. (This has only been maybe two weeks ago). Anyway.... Today as I was going to town I heard an attorney on the radio saying "If you or someone you know has attempted or committed suicide while on Neurontin, please call this number.....".
WHAT IN THE HECK IS GOING ON?
I am a member of the Phen-Fen board as well (nuff said) and a friend on that board told me about this one. Now Im totally freaked out!
Is there anyone out here in cyber land that has Neurofibromatosis and able to take ANYTHING SAFE for pain management?
None of the pain management Drs here will see him because hes under 16.
I do intend to call the Drs office first thing in the morning, however I know the neurologist is out of town till next week.

ANY advice would be greatly appreciated!

Re: Advice needed please.

Hi Layla, & welcome to this side of the site. I occasionally go to other sites & wondered what the heck was going on at the Phen fen site because of all the posts. We can discuss that later.
Yes there is a problem with Neurontin if you read the posts here--and it's growing. I have RSD & was prescribed Neurontin for that, & it was promoted as off-lable use for Neuriontin & Pfizer got slapped with that big $403 miliion dollar fine. Did you find that article on this site? :-?
let's see neurofibromatosis--The FDA approved it only for shingles & as incojunction with other meds for seizures. I'm not sure what your son has, but the other 11 illegally promoted unapproved uses are: BIPOLAR,PAIN SYNDROMES: peripheraal Neuropathy,Diabetic Neuropathy, TREATMENT of epilepsy alone, RSD, ADD,  RLS,PHN, Trigeminal Neuralgia, Essential Tremor, Periodic Limb movement, migrane, Drug & alcohol withdrawl seizures.
What a mouthful.  yikes If I were you I'd call Pfizer at 1-800-438-1985 and ask them if it's approved for that. Then ask them to send you the 27 page report that is supposed to come with the prescription, which it doesn't, & look up for yourself. It's a very nasty drug. We call it neROTTON over here & the neROTTON HANGOVER. Good luck. Sorry I didn't get back sooner. I just got my kids back to school. I got off the drug & still have problems 6 months later--that's the hangover part. I never committed suicide, although I did get into a car accident on it, & I'm 44 & never had 1 before, that was my fault. Good luck & keep us posted. Aloha Skooze
