Anyone with any information on the defects that their child have incurred from this use please let me know. I was given Brethine, procardia, and the magnesium drip during my pregnancy. My son who is almost four years old has some problems which may be contributed to this/these meds and I am really concerned about his development. If there is anyone out there with any type of information that would be helpful to me I would greatly appreciate it. I would also like to know what types of developmental problems that has happened with the baby/child to see if it is similar to my son. I was informed by my doctor that this medication was perfectly safe and has no long term effects. I was unaware that it may cause developmental problems. My son was diagnosed with Autism, April of this year. However there is no link at this time that this medication causes Autism. So no one seems to really care that I was never told that there were any long term effects. Which the makers of this medicine put out that this is not meant for pre term labor and may cause developmental problems in baby. So if I could go back in time and had known that there was a slight bit of chance I can guarantee that I would NEVER have taken anything and my doctor knew that. So I hope someone reads this and changes their mind when they take this medication, which is still being administered to preterm labor patients and save a life. My son has no life they took it away from him. This would not have been the life I would have chose for him being given the choice and truth. Good Luck.

The effects of Brethine during pregnancy have not been adequately studied. If you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant, inform your doctor immediately. It is not known whether Brethine appears in breast milk. If this drug is essential to your health, your doctor may advise you to stop nursing your baby until your treatment is finished.

Some of these medicines can increase blood sugar, blood pressure, and heart rate in the mother, and may increase the heart rate and decrease blood sugar in the infant. Before taking any of these medicines, make sure your doctor knows if you are pregnant or may become pregnant.
Some of these medicines also relax the muscles of the uterus and may delay labor.
For albuterol : Albuterol has not been studied in pregnant women. Studies in animals have shown that albuterol causes birth defects when given in doses many times the usual human dose.
For ephedrine : Ephedrine has not been studied in pregnant women or in animals.
For epinephrine : Epinephrine has been shown to cause birth defects in humans. However, this medicine may be needed during allergic reactions that threaten the mother's life.
For isoproterenol : Studies on birth defects with isoproterenol have not been done in humans. However, there is some evidence that it causes birth defects in animals.
For metaproterenol : Metaproterenol has not been studied in pregnant women. However, studies in animals have shown that metaproterenol causes birth defects and death of the animal fetus when given in doses many times the usual human dose.
For terbutaline : Terbutaline has not been shown to cause birth defects in humans using recommended doses or in animal studies when given in doses many times the usual human dose.
Breast-feeding?
For albuterol, isoproterenol, and metaproterenol : It is not known whether albuterol, isoproterenol, or metaproterenol passes into breast milk. Although most medicines pass into breast milk in small amounts, many of them may be used safely while breast-feeding. Mothers who are taking this medicine and who wish to breast-feed should discuss this with their doctor.
For ephedrine : Ephedrine passes into breast milk and may cause unwanted side effects in babies of mothers using ephedrine.
For epinephrine : Epinephrine passes into breast milk and may cause unwanted side effects in babies of mothers using epinephrine.
For terbutaline : Terbutaline passes into breast milk but has not been shown to cause harmful effects in the infant. Mothers who are taking this medicine and who wish to breast-feed should discuss this with their doctor.
Children? There is no specific information comparing use of isoproterenol, metaproterenol, or terbutaline in children with use in other age groups.
Excitement and nervousness may be more common in children 2 to 6 years of age who take albuterol than in adults and older children.
Infants and children may be especially sensitive to the effects of epinephrine.

The use of Brethine (Terbutaline) during pregnancy should never be taken lightly. It is clearly a risk/benefit decision. In simple terms, in preterm labor it relaxes the uterus. This is used only when the diagnosis of preterm labor has been made.
Respiratory distress and pneumonia are risks of preterm birth, which present a higher risk of mortality than administration of the drug. There are maternal side effects which are quite unpleasant but women bear them because of the risk of prematurity. This drug has not even been approved by the FDA for use in this manner, but its use is certainly within the standard of care for preterm labor.
