Astra Zeneca’s popular schizophrenia drug Seroquel has been linked with a high incidence of diabetes, hyperglycemia and other blood sugar disorders. Seroquel is in the class of drugs called atypical antipsychotics, which are a newer class of antipsychotics touted as having a lower incidence of blood sugar disorders than the older medications such as Haldol and Thorazine. Seroquel was approved by the FDA in 1997.

Data from a study that was reported at a conference of the International Society for Pharmacoepidemiology in Philadelphia August 23 and 24, 2003 showed that patients on Seroquel had 3.34 times as many cases of diabetes as those on older antipsychotic drugs. The study of 19,878 U.S. military veterans between October 1998 and October 2001 indicated that Seroquel and other members of the new class of anti-psychotic drugs posed a higher risk of diabetes. The effect was most pronounced with Seroquel.

Seroquel possible side effect?

I have been taking seroquel for 9 months and I feel that it has worked for the anxiety and a bit of my depression.  Along side this I feel no emtoion and an empty feeling in me in terms of thought process and thinking ability.  Could this be a side effect by seroquel???  My triclycirides have jumped to 3 times the normal amount!  I also feel very drowsy in the morning and feel bettrer towards the night as the drug probably tapers off..Is anyone else feeling an emtiness inside them and an inability to think quick on their feet???  Also I am on 900mg a day which I a very high dose in my opinion.

Re: Seroquel possible side effect?

I take 300 mg of Seroquel and my shrink says that is the highest dosage in her practice (which includes numerous other Dr's)  I would never wake up on 900 mg a day.....most people I know take 50-100 mg total per day.

Re: Seroquel possible side effect?

My Mother was given Seroquel.  She was diabetic.  She was also given Lithium.  She died last week after battling a vicious case of acute renal failure.  I know that Lithium is contraindicated in renal insufficiency/failure, but need to know more about the Seroquel.  I honestly believe my Mother was a victim of gross negligence because of the prescribed drugs and her medical condition.  I just need some help.
