Astra Zeneca’s popular schizophrenia drug Seroquel has been linked with a high incidence of diabetes, hyperglycemia and other blood sugar disorders. Seroquel is in the class of drugs called atypical antipsychotics, which are a newer class of antipsychotics touted as having a lower incidence of blood sugar disorders than the older medications such as Haldol and Thorazine. Seroquel was approved by the FDA in 1997.

Data from a study that was reported at a conference of the International Society for Pharmacoepidemiology in Philadelphia August 23 and 24, 2003 showed that patients on Seroquel had 3.34 times as many cases of diabetes as those on older antipsychotic drugs. The study of 19,878 U.S. military veterans between October 1998 and October 2001 indicated that Seroquel and other members of the new class of anti-psychotic drugs posed a higher risk of diabetes. The effect was most pronounced with Seroquel.

New to Seroquel

I was put on Seroquel November 1 while in the hospital for a severe depressive phase of ultra rapid cycling bipolar disorder. I was suicidal, and the pdoc prescribed me 100 mg and I slept for 16 hrs! I woke up ravenous, and spent the rest of my awake time feeling sexually charged. I also experienced rapid painful heartbeats, twitching as well as hand tremors. Upon my release I told the doctor all of this and his response was for me to cut the pill in half. Even having done this, I still have these symptoms. I stopped taking it yesterday, and I have been awake since. I feel like stopping this med put me in a manic phase. I had no choice though, as I have to be able to function. My doctor was also aware of my medical history, as I have two heart conditions and a family history of diabetes. I am now, unbelievably, lactating! I am so NOT pregnant, and find this side effect to be the most dumbfounding, if not most painful of them all. I have no idea what to do about my illness at this point. I have been on everything, and nothing has helped, if anything, everything I have been on has made my illness worse. I would love to go the natural path, get a holistic psychologist, and herbologist, but I have no insurance, and can't afford this option either. What is wrong with this sytem?? Does anyone have answers??

I don't see how I am unethical in this matter, but do explain to me how you do?

Thank you for bringing that poster to my attention.  It turns out that it was someone advertising for a casino website and so it was banned.  Very secretly hidden in the post where to click on that link.  Please disregard their remarks as it was not relative to subject matter.

Re: New to Seroquel

HI CONTRADIXION,

I DON'T WANT TO SCARE YOU, BUT MY 20 YEAR YOUNG SUNSHINE DIED OF A SUICIDE LAST JANUARY. HE WAS TAKING THE ANTIDEPRESSSANT EFFEXOR.
My 20 year old son, Tayler, committed suicide while attempting to get off of effexor [an antidepressant]. In his Will he writes:

"The effexor XR is horrible, but it's impossible to get off of safely. Search google for "verlafaxine withdrawal". But the pain, the pills... there is no other way out. I wanted/hoped that things would improve. Paxil and effexor are evil DRUGS, made and prescribed for the profit of Pharmaceutical companies...with no care taken about the effects they have on a person's brain, body, well-being, and safety. You really should read up on the horrible experiences people have suffered due to paxil, and/or effexor. The nightmares, psychosis, feeling of a need to get up/do something, suicidal thoughts, nausea, skin-crawling feeling, etc. The constant pain, strange feelings, nervousness, uneasy feelings, toothaches, dizzyness, nausea, etc. It's too much to take. I really wish the psychosis was not so bad. I feel so uneasy, strange, like I'm not ME. Tell Natalie that I'm sorry about what happened when she was down here...but having a quiet, dark-at-night, private room, with t.v. shows and websites to keep me occupied, was needed for my sanity. I love you Mom, Dad, Marcus, Natalie. I do not believe what I am about to do is cowardly..."

Shortly after writing his will (I have only included the parts of his will that talks about effexor and it's effects) he went to the roof of our 14 story building and jumped to his death. Effexor took a toll on our lives too. After his death I found on his computer an analogue of his last 4 days on effexor. He stated that on january 4rth of 2005 his dosage was cut back to half. Beside this dosage he states "experienced extreme psychosis on half a dose; i will pray for sleep for tonight and tomorrow i will go back on a full dose and hope for a better day." The next 4 days he states that he took a full dose each day until the 9th of january, which is left blank because that is the day he committed suicide.

NOW MY 18 YEAR OLD SON WILL NOT GO NEAR ANY ANTIDEPRESSANTS.
HOWEVER, HE DID SOME RESEARCH AND FOUND THAT ST. JOHN'S WORT, A NATURAL PRODUCT THAT YOU CAN FIND AT ANY HEALTH FOOD STORE AND MOST PHARMACIES THAT SELL HERBS AND VITAMINS, IS A GOOD NATURAL ANTIDEPRESSANT.  IF YOU CAN'T TOLERATE THE OIL IN ST. JOHN'S WORT YOU CAN GET THEM IN CAPLET FORM IN SOME STORES.  THIS IS BOTH GOOD FOR DEPRESSION, INSOMNIA AND TO CALM NERVES.  THERE ARE OTHER NATURAL PRODUCTS WITH MORE INGREDIENTS IN THEM, JUST ASK ANY SALESMAN, MANAGER AT THE HEALTH FOOD STORE, ETC. [THEY'LL LET YOU KNOW FOR FREE]  A NEW PRODUCT MY SON IS USING NOW, INSTEAD OF ST. JOHN'S WORT, BECAUSE HE RAN OUT, IS "MELATONIN" WHICH HELPS TO IMPROVE SLEEP. HE'S SLEEPING RIGHT NOW SO I CAN'T ASK HIM IF HE IS HAPPY WITH THIS PRODUCT.

MY HUSBAND TAKES SEROQUEL TO GET HIMSELF TO SLEEP.  I ASKED HIM FOR A PILL ONE NIGHT BECAUSE I COULDN'T SLEEP.  HE WOULD ONLY GIVE ME HALF A PILL.  WOW.  THAT KNOCKED ME OUT.  HOWEVER, LIKE YOU SAID, IT'S THE SIDE EFFECTS THE FOLLWING DAY THAT I DIDN'T LIKE.  I WON'T TAKE THIS PILL AGAIN.  PS.  DON'T TRY VALERIAN ROOT BY ITSELF [A NATURAL PRODUCT]. IT DID NOTHING TO GET ME TO SLEEP.

TRULY,
PANDA GARBUTT

Re: New to Seroquel

I went through 10 months of interferion for hep C.  I was extremely ill the entire time. I had bronchitis for three months. It took forever to shake that.  My doctors told me I would be able to work during treatment.  Not true, allthough I have some friends that were able to work.  My ninth month I developed an ulcer.  My doctor and NP would not believe me until a month later when I was spitting up fresh blood.  I was taken off the interferion at that point.  I was not sleeping and was experiencing hyper mania and when I did sleep I had night terrors.  That is when I was prescribed Seroquil.  It did help me at the time.
Now it's 9 months later and I have been under alot of stress.  I began taking the Seroquil again (50 mgs) at night to try to get some sleep. I also take 3mg of Zanax  at night.  I have felt better  and have been able to sleep however; now I am experiencing extreme muscle aches.  Also my hep is back and my cholestral is higher than it has ever been.  I am not groggy in the morning and have stopped drinking coffee altoghther.  Has any one experienced these muscle achs????
After reading some of your testimonials I think I should chunk the Seroquil but wonder if I'll ever sleep again.  de
