Depakote and pregnancy

Hello,
A friend of mine and I were recently discussing Depakote. Her doctor is thinking of putting her on it so she was doing some research. She found that it maybe linked to some serious birth defects. http://www.newsinferno.com/pharmaceuticals/depakote-similar-epilepsy-drugs-can-up-the-risk-of-neural-tube-other-birth-defects/

Does anyone know anything more about it? Is it safe to take while pregnant? Any good or bad stories welcome.
