On May 15, 2006, the FDA issued a press release stating: "Based on this scientific and epidemiological data suggesting that ReNu with MoistureLoc may increase susceptibility to Fusarium, Bausch & Lomb has decided to permanently remove the ReNu with MoistureLoc product worldwide." The recall followed Bausch & Lomb's conclusion that the product's formula may increase the risk of fusarium keratitis, a serious fungal eye infection.Bausch & Lomb, Inc. and the FDA both acknowledged there is a problem in the chemical properties of ReNu with MoistureLoc after testing confirmed that the solution allows a polymer film to form around the Fusarium fungus, preventing the disinfectant in the product from killing the fungus.

An estimated 30 million persons in the United States wear soft contact lenses; the annual incidence of microbial keratitis is estimated to be 4-21 per 10,000 soft contact lens users. Fungal keratitis is a condition more prevalent in warm climates. First-line treatment includes topical and oral antifungal medications; patients who do not respond to medical treatment usually require surgical intervention, including corneal transplantation. These infections are not transmitted from person to person. If not timely treated, Fusarium keratitis may lead to complete destruction of the cornea and loss of the eye itself.

Save my opticals!

Over the past week, the vision in my right eye has steadily decreased, getting more and more blurry by the day. Last night, I discovered that the contact solution that I have been using, ReNu MoistureLoc was recalled. I went to the ER  and explained my problem, also explaining the recall on the solution. My vision was 20/200. They gave me an antibiotic ointment, referred me to an opthamologist and discharged me with "chemical conjunctivitis."  I saw the opthamologist today who said it didn't look like an infection because it wasn't red or producing discharge, but I have suddenly developed severe astigatism. He scheduled me for an orbscan in two weeks to see (if there is an infection) if it develops, or if my vision worsens. Losing my vision in a week is scary enough, but I do not want to wait two weeks to see how much worse it will get. My eye is painful and the dizziness and disorientation is not pleasant, either. I'm going to get a second opinion, because according to my research, fusarium keratitis causes irregular astigmatism, it does not look like conjunctivitis and  it is difficult to diagnose.
I was wondering if anyone had vision loss without the redness or discharge.
I would also like to know if anyone knows an opthamologist in NJ who is familiar with this infection.
Thank you,
Eva

Hi Eva,

Fortunately, it doesn't sound like fursarium keratitis.  You would be experiencing more severe symptoms.   You wouldn't be able to drive, you won't be able to stand bright lights and most of all you'll be crying from the pain this infection gives. I haven't heard of fursarium keratitis causing astigmatism.  Get a second opinion if you wish.

May I ask how you got a bottle of this?  It has been a year since all this begun.  Or are you using old Moisture Loc that you've had?  If so maybe that is what is causing your distress.  I'm assuming eye solution has experation dates.
