On May 15, 2006, the FDA issued a press release stating: "Based on this scientific and epidemiological data suggesting that ReNu with MoistureLoc may increase susceptibility to Fusarium, Bausch & Lomb has decided to permanently remove the ReNu with MoistureLoc product worldwide." The recall followed Bausch & Lomb's conclusion that the product's formula may increase the risk of fusarium keratitis, a serious fungal eye infection.Bausch & Lomb, Inc. and the FDA both acknowledged there is a problem in the chemical properties of ReNu with MoistureLoc after testing confirmed that the solution allows a polymer film to form around the Fusarium fungus, preventing the disinfectant in the product from killing the fungus.

An estimated 30 million persons in the United States wear soft contact lenses; the annual incidence of microbial keratitis is estimated to be 4-21 per 10,000 soft contact lens users. Fungal keratitis is a condition more prevalent in warm climates. First-line treatment includes topical and oral antifungal medications; patients who do not respond to medical treatment usually require surgical intervention, including corneal transplantation. These infections are not transmitted from person to person. If not timely treated, Fusarium keratitis may lead to complete destruction of the cornea and loss of the eye itself.

If you or a loved one was injured by ReNu with MoistureLoc, please complete the free case inquiry form on the right side of this page.

Re: UPDATE PLEASE

Hi Linda,
You know... This all just makes me SO SO very mad!!  I hate glasses too.  I have a commercial cleaning business that I run, and having glasses sliding around makes me feel even MORE glamorous.
You would think that when people come back from Iraq, simple things, like 'good enough' healthcare, wouldn't be something you would have to deal with, you know?
I was so desperate for relief from my eyes I decided to do it. (The plugs). I have to be honest though.  My eyes aren't AS bad, but the only measure my doc gave me was I would have tearing down my face if my eyes did NOT need the extra moisture. No tears on my face so the doc said, yeah, you need them.  I still squint most of the time, and look down my nose to see correctly, blink a ton, etc etc, so is my situation much different, not really.. Sorry, but I am in collections for it, and I wouldn't have done it if I hadn't been told to.
Was anyone diagnosed with 'occular migraines'?  I saw/see zaps and flashes, and a weird floating rectangle bar and other mystery stuff, sometimes with terrible headaches sometimes with out the headaches and that is the diagnosis they gave me.
I had two opinions on that one too. It sortof seemed like they weren't sure what to make of those symptoms, so I am curious.  Also, I found, after all this time that if I wear sunglasses every second around sunlight, I won't get the headaches.  But I have to have glasses on every minute, not exaggerating!! Hard to do with  three and a four year old. Anyones input would be great, now that I have figured out how to use this. Take care!!

Re: UPDATE PLEASE

Michigan,
That is so weird about the occular migraines, my opt. said that I my have experienced that as well. She really didn't know what happened to me..I got very dizzy, it was like an "out of body" experience and with the headache too. Dark shapes etc. It only happened once thank God!!
I have been attending my neices softball games and it has been very windy out, well wind and dry eye DO NOT go together!! It was terrible and so painful.
As far as glasses, I am a Restuarant Manager and it is a pain in the a!@#, they are always fogging up, getting dirty etc. After having 8 Ulcers, they are so sensitive that when we slice onion...you'd think I am dying!!(lol) Everyone elses eyes tear up for a few minutes, not me...major attack!! Heck, if a bagel burns, I run out the back door!! It just sucks so bad, I NEVER had an eye problem in my life.
Ok, my complaining for the day is done, thanks for listening smile.  I hope we get an update real soon from P&W  to see where we are at.
Take Care!

Re: UPDATE PLEASE

Just checking in to see how everyone has been doing? Hope all is well with everyone, I am doing fine down here in Fl. I just accepted a job with a new company and I am excited about that...the downside is that I have to travel for 8 weeks for training. It's 1 1/2 hours each way sad  Having Dye Eye I am very concerned about the issues I have while driving..I need to pull over at least once a week because my eyes get so bad and I can't see, that works ok for around town but on the highway..it really scares me. I didn't tell my new company about my eyes and I don't want to...so I guess I will have to try to deal with the best I can. At least when the 8 weeks are over, it is about 3 minutes from my house...so that'll be great!

Well, take care all and please update on how you are doing!

Re: UPDATE PLEASE

Anyone heard anything new on our cases lately?  I have had no contact and this seems to really be dragging on a long time.  Seems we should be at the deposition point by now and ready to start trying to settle this mess so we can get our injuries fixed and move on with our lives!!

Re: UPDATE PLEASE

Wow Sylken, what a mess for your family...I am so sorry to hear this is happening to you. It makes me alittle nervous to hear your story. I have permenant scarring just off to the side of my cornea and also now have astigmatisim, from having 6 ulcers in my left eye, and if that isn't being recognized...I'm going to be in the same boat as your son!! Your right, this has been a mess and I know my eyes will never be the same. On a positive note at least you even got a phone call to appear for a depo. I haven't heard anything except to sign some more medical release forms last month.
I had a dr. treat me for just 3 ulcers in left eye but then over night I developed 3 more and 2 in my right eye...So I saw an Opth. the next day who couldn't culture my eyes due to the drops the other Dr. started me on but he did culture me contacts and lens case which did test positive for Keratitis. Like your son I healed pretty quickly due to my Opth. being aggressive on my treatment. It concerns me that our type of cases aren't as important!! I am grateful that I didn't need a transplant or go blind and feel terrible for those who did, however, this has changed my life so much...every day I hate the fact I have to wear glasses and that I have severe dry eye. My eyes are always red and irratated. I really hope things turn around for you, keep us up to date and good luck!!

Re: UPDATE PLEASE

Yes, an update is good.  Also, just wanted to let them know that my vision has gotten WORSE.  I can only wear glasses.  No more contacts.  If I don't have my glasses on, I literally CAN NOT SEE.  I have the ulcer and need to know where to we go from here?

Re: UPDATE PLEASE

noeladri,

I would contact P&W if your vision has gotten worse.  I do believe they did say that in one of their updates.

Feel free to contact me via email and we can talk, I think it will be helpful.

Re: UPDATE PLEASE

Will do.  I had the ulcer on my eye, and the optometrist(?) that should have caught that didn't do it on his visit.  He forgot to tell me, but I believe it is in my medical files that I gave a copy to P&W, gosh, sometime ago.  I had been using ReNu for YEARS and each year my vision is getting worse and worse.  I wear my glasses more - if I don't have my glasses on, my vision is literally blurred.  Haven't gotten back into contacts.

Re: UPDATE PLEASE

Jen, the update came in a form of a letter from Parker and Waichman.  Now grant it we can't discuss anything the letter had in it but I think we should be able to share our feelings and of what we think about the whole case.

Re: UPDATE PLEASE

Well...I guess everyone is busy or just is not sure what to say!! I just hope B&L does the right thing in respect to all cases!! It is not right to wait this long for answers! For those needing medical care, it is really not fair. I only need pucntal plugs and new glasses ( not a huge deal) but I know there are people who need better medical care than they are getting because they can't afford it.
I hope everyone gets what deserve in their cases and I pray for rapid settlement!!

Re: UPDATE PLEASE

Going to the eye doctor isn't a cheap thing when you don't have insurance and sometimes when you do have insurance it still isn't cheap.  I think it's absurd some folks can't even go to the doctor because there is no way to afford it and then in the mean time there problems could worsen.  All because a company who know they are at fault refuses to take responsibility.

I hope there is a rapid settlement also and that people who are really affected get the right compensation and good medical coverage.
